Confused as hell

I have an Alesis DM5 and an Akai S-20 sampler I want to trigger from pads connected to the DM5..I know(??) this is possible and I know(??) it requires using MIDI but I'm lost...I just found a link under the "I hate MIDI" thread that I'm going to check out...I have a MIDI cable going from the MIDI OUT of the DM5 to the MIDI IN of the S-20. I thought I set all the parameters right but I Guess not...Is there anything obvious I'm not doing?

Cool

I think everybody has been to "I hate MIDI land" at one point or another but the fact remains that this is a very cool protocol. A lot of information transmitted over a very shabby line. Right now it seems to me a very low priority to synchonize data paths (protocols) with audio and video data paths. If it ain't broke: don't fix it!!!!

Oh yeah. I feel your pain over the communication failure.

You need to set both machines so they are transmitting and receiving on the same MIDI channel. Default MIDI channel for drums is Channel 10. So set the sampler to receive MIDI commands on channel 10. It would be a huge help if you have a manual for both pieces of gear because nowadays everything is a scroll-through menu and you'll play hell trying to figure out how to adjust parameters without the literature.
