Possible Boss DR770 Midi Out Problem - Anyway to Verify???
Hey all,
I've got a DR770 drum machine that I'm trying to sequence with Cakewalk express...I can control the DR770 with cakewalk, i.e. I can start and stop it, etc. so I know that the computer midi out is talking with the DR770. However, I cannot record any patterns into Cakewalk. They're both set to channel ten, and I think Cakewalk is configured right as they're communicating the one way. The only other midi device I have is the Roland 840EX recorder. That has a midi indicator light and it lit up when cakewalk was transmitting data and cakewalk has an indicator for incoming and outgoing midi signals and the inbound light lit up when I hit the transport controls on the VS so I don't think it's a cable issue or anything because cakewalk seemed to be receiving data from the VS unit. However, when I connected the DR770 back up the inbound Cakewalk indicator lights up and stays lit even when the DR770 is just sitting there. So I think something is messed up with the Midi Out on the DR770 where it's continuously transmitting something, but nothing that cakewalk is recognizing. I also tried to do a synch track to the VS with the DR770 with no luck, but I could do it with Cakewalk. Does anyone have any ideas what is going on or how to verify that this really is a problem with the DR770 remembering that I only have Cakewalk and the VS to verify with? Thanks, Wish www.mp3.com/IWish |

When you are trying to start sync with the drum machine do you have only the "MIDI" button depressed? If you use the "MMC" control as well then CW is looking for the sync message before it will start. Also, when you are trying to trigger sounds from the 770 is your keyboard MIDI in configered to receive MIDI messages on channel 10? I know it's kinda obvious but I gotta ask.....

What I'm trying to do is.....
record some basic drum patterns into Cakewalk where I can then tweak some things in Cakewalk and have Cakewalk control the drum machine after. That part works and Cakewalk does control the drum machine.
I just can't get anything to record into Cakewalk. It's like no data is going through to the PC even though the MIDI In indicator light stays lit in Cakewalk. What I am doing is arming the track and hitting the record button in Cakewalk. The drum machine starts playing, but no data is recorded. Cakewalk is set to receive MIDI Omni and sends on channel ten. Drum machine is set on channel ten and I'm not sure about the MMC. The drum machine's MIDI choices are INT (internal) or MIDI, but I assume it's MMC. I also don't have a midi keyboard...that might help isolate the problem if I did, huh? My midi devices are the PC w/Cakewalk, the drum machine, and the Roland VS840EX recorder. Thanks, Wish |

After screwing around with this for days...I went through the midi settings on the drum machine. Midi Thru was set to ON and after I turned that OFF I was able to record the drum patterns into Cakewalk...
Too much technology can be a bad thing!!! Thanks, Wish |
