Yo Teach: [I just retired from teaching]

I run my entire studio set-up from a stereo Yamaha AX 592 integrated amp.

I also use YSM-1 monitors and they sound wonderful, especially when you consider the few dollars they cost.

Now, you can use almost any type of amp to run your YSM-1's as long as it outputs enough bang and most of them do.

I like the Yam integrated for these reasons: I can run two sets of speakers from the amp; since I got the YSM's, I seldom use the other hi-fi speakers by Infinity; also, I run CD, PHONO, and two tape decks which will record either way. There is also an AUX circuit for whatever, DAT, etc. But a nice feature of this amp is a straight through plug which bypasses all coloring from the Yamaha amp.

This feature gives you exactly what you hear through the monitors on whatever medium you mix to: CD, DAT, Tape.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

Yo Teach:

The Yam amp runs 500 US dollars or thereabouts.

Yamaha prices are pretty fixed unless you have a brother in the business or a other connections.

If you're really really serious about studio sound, go for a Hafler or a Bryston.... if not, well... whatever works for ya!

If we could afford bryston, we would be listening to genelecs now wouldnt we? You can try to aquire a two channel carver used there seem to be alot of them arround since alot of audiophiles are using 5 channel amps nowdays. these 1000.00 amps are going for 300.00 on the average. Its not bryston quality but its as close as you will come without it breaking you.

I got lucky and got mine for 20.00, 400w and perfect?

Yeah 'fixed' indeed GH. Since they control about 90% of distribution for all the products we know and love... the mafia of music product distribution..

AB international make some nice amps as well.

Not necessarily, the less expensive monitors need even more clean, high-current power to bring them out than the better ones do.

Case in point - NS-10s - or in my case, I use a Hafler P3000 to power Tannoy Proto-Js.......

Actually Gidge - the P-series would be better (but, yes, more expensive!)

Bruce, I just got the TA 1600 powering KRK Rokits. It seems be a good fit. The amp produces good clean power, and even when cranked the system sounded punchy, not distorted or muddy. I haven't mixed on the system yet, but I listened to Aja tonight and the detail and clarity of the sound was impressive at all levels.

Cool

Bruce,

its a pretty decent little amp.....very low wattage, but I monitor pretty low.....it smacks the hell out of these little M5's.....you can pretty much crank it with no nasties, clicks, pops, snaps, crackles, etc.....

Im still not sure about thse little M5 monitors, but I got them for $100 more than I woulda paid for the amp by itself.....they sound pretty good, stereo imaging is nice, but terribly bass shy IMO, but I just love a phat ass low end....

All things considers, for a modest home set-up like mine, it is a decent little setup....

You will find bryston at all of your finer high end stereo outlets, you know the one where they sell the 2000.00 and up amps.
