Question BlackFace ADAT's?

Hello, I'm a new guy to this board!

In a couple of weeks I'm renting an ADAT from a guy. I asked him what kind it was and He said it was a blackface. I have never heard of them before and really dont know if they are any good.

Does anyone know anything about them?

THnx,

Tyler

Anything ADAT is good. I believe the particular one he is referring to is the Type1 model that is a 16 bit recorder. The LX's and XT's
are 20 bit.

Daht,16 bit vs 20 bit to the common consumer will both sound
clean and clear. To your average home recordist to a major studio engineer, the differences in sonic quality can be heard. But note that many a fine recordings has been and still is being made at 16. At the present time, digital quality has been extended to 24/96.

But 16 or 20,ADATS,IMHO,still rule for us old-school,tapehead,analog-retention recordists (and some engineers)!

Peace

16 bits vs 20 bits

For every bit you get (theoretically) 6 dB of dynamic range. Thus a 16 bit system will yield a max of 96 dB dynamic range and a 20 bit system a max of 120 dB dynamic range. 24 dB difference is a lot since dBs are logarithmic.

For full scale (loud) recordings, 16 bits are fine. If you are recording softer passages or classical recordings with lots of dynamics, 20 bits is a minimum.

You can hear differences especially at low levels. Raise your monitors at the end of a fade and you will hear some "hash" or quantization noise with a 16 bit system, whereas the 20 bit will be clean all the way down.

Hi all,I'm considering a blackface too. Price is the factor + the portability of these decks and the step up in quality recordings for live situations as I now use a tascam 234 which has it's place. What I want to know is how many hours on a used deck is too many? Assuming it has been matained and how much does it cost aprox. to service adat's here in the NY tri state area. and lastly can I use a mixer like my Peavey unity Reference 300? How ya been Q
