DXi standard and GSIF (GigaSampler Interface)

Just curious whether the DXi standard and GSIF (GigaSampler Interface) complement each other or are competing technologies. I see that Sonar is going in the direction of DXi. The reason I ask is this:

1) Because DXi is a Microsoft standard it will be available much faster on latest and greatest operating systems such as Windows 2000.

2) If I invest in a software sampler, is GigaSampler the way to go or should I wait for DXi to mature?

I am not completely sure but I don't think you can sample anything utilizing DXIs as of yet. DXI deals mainly with sound synthesis. So if you wanted to play sampled sounds you'd have to do that with something other than a DXI...I think?
Maybe someone else will elaborate more on this.....

...I believe NI's Battery is a DXi sampler, at least I read a review about it in Computer Music.
