No, I ain't dead yet; we just got REALLY busy. We're adding a second room, so I've been talking to the bank, getting insurance, knocking out walls, rebuilding the place, buying more equipment, and working on bands all the time this other stuff is going on. It'll probably settle down in a few weeks, I hope.

I haven't forgotten my chores here: I'll be testing the C3000B, finishing up the Studio Projects tests, adding piano and drum miking techniques to the polar response thread, and adding a detailed explanation on near coincidence stereo mic techniques to finish off that thread.

After a million trips to the chiropractor for my pinched sciatic nerve, I ended up taking some Vioxx pills my wife had left over from something or other. That cured it completely in about 2 days.

Phew.........glad to hear everythings OK. BTW Harvey, talk to your bank for me too, PLEASE.
I have just had a C3000 for a few days to play with while I wait for my SP C1 to arrive, so I'll be interested in your comments. Even though I started playing guitar as a kid in '62 I'm only new to the recording side of things and your reviews, etc are invaluable. Take care and have fun.......

Peace...........ChrisO

I was just about to hassle you for the C3000 review. So I finally know how good/bad that (first mic) buy was...

Good to know I haven't missed it, and your still planning on doing it... Cool.

We're getting an MCI 556d for the big "A" room, shortloaded with 48 channels {it's the very last MCI 500 console ever made), and either an MCI 636 or a Harrison 36 channel for the small room. The JBL 4311Bs with the Cerwin Vega sub will stay in the small "B" room and I'll either use my JBL 4310s or a custom JBL monitor setup in the "A" room. George Augspurger (a famous studio designer, and an old friend from my JBL days) will be designing the big room and the new control room.

We'll split up some of the effects between the two rooms and we'll have 24 channels of DA-38 in the small room and eventually 48 channels of DA-38 in the big room, plus a hard disc 24 track recorder. At some point, we'll probably add a 2" 16/24 track for drum mixes.

The small room can handle most rock bands up to about 8 or 9 people; the large room will handle up to 20 or so.

Should be interesting.

Hey Harvey, make sure you get lot's of pictures during the construction process so you can put up your studio pics on John Sayer's studios under construction site.

Glad to hear you're feelin' better.

Harvey...sounds like some great stuff for your place and, if you remember, I swear by my 4311's too. The Harrison ought to be a sweet board if you get it. I haven't seen a MCI in a while now, but I cut my chops on an old black face. Where do you find these items? I search here in Nashville, (I'm from Ky)but no such luck. Are you selling the Topaz? Also, how big are these custom JBL's gonna be?

Actually, the MCI 500D is sitting in Nashville right now and Randy Blevins is gonna be working on it. Same with the 636 and the Harrison (altho I don't know if those two smaller boards are from Nashville).

The custom JBL is a cool deal. Many years ago, I was talking to Ed May, the chief engineer at JBL, about wanting to get another pair of discontinued 4310s to match the pair JBL gave me as a gift.

Ed suggested I buy his speaker from his house, which used the basic 4310 components, except his system had two woofers per side, he handbuilt each of the JBL speakers in it, and each side of the beautiful handmade speaker console had 8 cubic feet of air behind it, and the system measured WITHIN 2 dB from 27Hz to 22kHz.

I'm thinking of pulling those components and putting them in a wall mounted speaker system that has the same cubic volume as the original.

Yes, I'm gonna be selling the 32 x 8 Soundtracs Topaz, and my Soundtracs 32 x 8 Solo board as well.

Hi Harvey,

I’ve been watching your threads in silent admiration for awhile. Very few of the older “been there done that” guys exhibit the patience and insight that I find in your threads. Many don’t realize that cost really is a factor (because they’re not used to thinking that way). I see lots of threads where a kid gets knocked for asking what’s the *best* mic, when we all know there really isn’t such a thing. It’s not their fault they don’t know that. Sometimes this is a search for a magic potion, but often it is simply a guy with a curious nature, who’s smart enough to answer questions (IMHO).

Why not write an article explaining this concept, while mentioning the new wave of Chinese copies and a few standbys (TLM103, 57, etc) for different price ranges. That way, people could post a link to that article to get them on the same page, rather than repeatedly typing a long explanation. (I admit to passing on mic recommendations rather than taking the time and space to post a proper response… I’m ashamed ;-)

Anyway, I’d write the article myself, but I feel certain an article like that would get a lot of page views. (Those sorts of questions come up constantly) I think it would be asinine of me to do it myself when there are guys like you on this bbs with 100 times the experience I have. If you did write it, I’d be more than happy to post it on my site with a link to your studio so people could get more info or get in touch with you.

PS…I strayed from bigger corporations to go independent (although I do mostly live sound). Do I miss having all the nice toys to play with? Sometimes, but I really feel it’s worth it. When you find out what’s left for those musicians, after their managers, producers, label, and big fat corporate sound companies take their chunk, it’s depressing. I work with the “bottom” 80 percent of bands, that the big companies don’t care to target. I do OK financially, over deliver to my clients, and sleep like a baby.

Harvey, thanks for helping out that 80 percent. BTW, when I was dealing with a pinched sciatic nerve, I tried everything. Aleve worked better than anything else I tried. (Though I hope you don’t have more problems any time soon :-)

Thanks again Harvey,

Brad Gallagher

Thanks Taylor… I’ve been going at it pretty hard in my spare time. If you have any advice, or would like to see something up there, please let me know… brad@just-for-musicians.com
BTW, I really want to post Steve Albini’s famous article up there. It’s one of my favorites. Does anyone know where I can get in touch with him to get permission to use it.

PS… Harvey, I had a real nice guy contact me about a console I was selling. I’m sending him your way if you haven’t already found a buyer for those two boards

I had read that article before. It's amazing that the artist receives so little of the enrichment from the total profit. It's immoral. They can cry all they want about the label being the one taking all the risk. It's just plain old fashioned greed for the label to take 3/4 of a million in profit and leave the band members with nothing.

The label may take all the pure economic risk, but time is money and those guys are out there working their asses off for $20 a day.

PS. I’ve seen the article at Mercenary, but it’s illegal and unethical to cut and paste something like that (IMO). I need to get in touch w/someone who can give me permission in an email, etc. to post it on my site.

Thanks

Yea,

And that's not even mentioning that they are the original owners of the product being sold in most cases. It's their artistic talent that the record companies are robbing them of.
