You need a preamp of some kind, a soundcard, and software IF you want to record onto your hard drive.
You can start with something like an ART tube MP, about $100US. Run the output from that into your soundcard. You will need a cable that is 1/4in male on one end and 1/8in male on the other. Plug into the LINE IN on your soundcard. For software check out NTracks. It's about $50US. Do a search for NTracks and you should find a link to their site. Keep your levels BELOW 0dB! In fact, -3dB should do you fine. You are gonna want some headphones, too, for when you start doing overdubs. Otherwise you are gonna get bleed and feedback from your monitors. I have no idea what your previous recording experience is but there are a lot of other considerations........ Do you eventually want to record more than 1 track at a time? Do you want to sequence MIDI? Do you have a drum machine or keyboard? Are you recording a band or just yourself? What is your budget? The further you get into this you will find that you may want a better soundcard than what came with your computer. Then you'll want better monitors, a mixer, better cables, better mics, sound treatments for your room, and nubile young tape ops girls. Oops, that last one is on my wish list..... Good luck and welcome. This is the best resource on the net for home recording. Search around, just about anything you want to know is somewhere on this site. Craig |
