Another Dumb Question

I have Cakewalk. My boyfriend has Cubase. I WANT Cubase...however, is it smart to have Cubase AND Cakewalk on the same computer? Would getting a network Card work? So that we don't have double everything in our 2 computer household. We share a LARGE workstation with my Synthesizer, 2 monitors and our boxes below and his...i figure we've merged the work area, why not link the computers? As it sits we've already got double Acid Pro, double this double that. It seems like a waste. Are their any issues to a network card or suggestions for brand to hook them up???

Actually your question is very confusing.

You won't be able to run the recording applications across the network, they are too intensive for that. Networking the PCs would allow file sharing, but you'd be sharing incompatible file types, (unless you just import each others wave files)

If you want Cubase, just ask him for it. This is what a MARRIED couple would do.

You mentioned double acid. Are you saying that you've been taking double hits of acid? This would explain your confusing, stream-of-conciousness approach to posing questions.

I guess, when it comes down to it, you 2 should decide on a software package. This would allow you to share compatible files. Get rid of any software you're not using.

Is it true that you can't share applications by networking computers? If that's the case, than how can it be done at my place of employment. The answer is probably...lots of $$$, but I KNOW that we do not have the software loaded individually in all of our machines. It comes from SOME CENTRAL LOCATION and we all patch into it.

We will not be utilizing the system at the same time. Please tell me their is a way to share applications...PLEEEAAASSEEEE!!!!

In general it won't work through the network at least it doesn't on my machines. The audio could be routed into the sound card by whatever means available and record on cubase but you won't be able to use it on your machine unless you install it. If you prefer cubase then by all means install it on your machine...I dont see why this is not possible but there may be conflicts which I am unaware of. Audio ports come to mind as one.
My girlfriend (who shares non-matrimonial bliss with me) uses a progam called Remotely Possible to operate her PC at work. This is not rocket science but does some require some setup and has its share of idiosyncracies.
Lots of people run Giga sampler on one computer and their sequencer on another. They link them together somehow. But probably not with network cards.
If I had a working copy of Cubase I'd install it on my machine tomorrow. ASIO is the way to go!
Check other forums like the giga where people are more helpful and less demeaning. Also let people know what your specs are especially your sound card.

The software you are sharing at work must be one that doesn't need big CPU. You can share softwares via network cables, but you won't be able to record or play audio. I guess it would be ok with midi. But, it seems a little complicated to setup such an installation without having any trouble. The best way is to install the softwares on each computer. If you want to share files, then you can do it through network cards. Or, simply buy a cd burner.

I have Two PC in my studio linked together by network cards. The reason I had to do this is that some of my software and hardware are incompatible with each other. One PC is designed strictly for recording and track editing. I have Sonar, Sound Forge 5, and few plug-ins. The second PC I want to use for mastering my mixes, burning CD's, and storage. This second PC was built from left over parts from upgrading my main PC. Network cards and Hubs are not as expensive as you might think; although, getting them to work right can be a bit of a pain. I use the network mainly to transfer files between the two PC.

Now about software on networks: There are two basic types: Standalone and Client/Server.
- Standalone software is what most of the recording software found on this BBS and in most homes. It has to be fully installed on every machine that uses it.
- Client/Server software comes in two parts. The Server piece is installed on a machine that is accessed by many other machines. This machine is usually more powerful then the PC connected to it and is designed to run multiple processes at on time. The Client software is installed on PC that the end-user works with. This software is usually smaller in size and does a limited amount of processing. It is more or less an interface to the software installed on the server.
