Cakewalk Pro Audio 9

Hello!

Newbee in the house. Question: I've got Scorewriter and Pro Audio 9. Did a MIDI arrangement on Scorewriter and exported it to
Pro Audio 9....sounds cool!!

Problem is that I have to place all the percussion tracks onto channel 10 on Scorewriter. (Thats the default General MIDI drums channel). Once exported onto Pro Audio 9, the assigned percussion tracks cannot be seperately mixed down. Bring down the volume on one percussion track and they all go down.

Does anyone know how can I assign these MIDI percussion tracks individually on Pro Audio 9?

You need to break the parts up into separate tracks. They have a CAL utility that will do this. Then you can pan and twiddle with each part of the kit individually.

Hi wannabee, welcome! Lot's of smart people around here, I have learned a lot.

I think you got it right, anything on channel 10 will work in tandem; turn down the kick drum and the snare goes down as well. There are solutions, like editing parts in the piano roll, etc.

The best way would be turning each part into audio, so you can mix like a "normal" mixer.

Thanks Guys......Now about this CAL utility.....can you tell me a little bit more about it? And what about turning each part into audio? I read something in Cakewalk about doing this so one can place vocal tracks in the recording. Can you guys elaborate?

You can place vocals into a MIDI recording with changing a thing, all you do is add an audio track and record onto it and it will playback along with all the MIDI tracks. But the only problem is, is that MIDI doesn't get recorded to .wav files (for burning to CD) or to MP3 files, so you have to re-record it as an audio file. Check out this site to see how to do it.

I don't know anything about the CAL program though, all that tekno jargin hurts my noggin.

Yeap...tried that. Only problem is one will have to master all the MIDI tracks down to what one wants, then record them all as one audio track. Then of course.... dump a vocal onto it as a seperate track. This is not that hard.

What I'm trying to do is to get the MIDI GM percussion tracks recorded separately. This is so I can master them down individually prior to recording the whole MIDI arrangement as one audio track. Can anyone help?

And yes.....one probably has to be a brain surgeon to figure out that CAL utility. Forget that man.....I rather spend the time making music..........

Same as described for the MIDI tracks, only don't mix them all down first and do them one by one. Of course this assumes you have separated the drum parts.

Well, maybe if you want to learn how to write CAL scripts you need to be a brain surgeon... but to run one somebody already wrote is not that difficult. Read the Cakewalk manual or Scott Garrigus' Cakewalk Power and they walk you through it.

If you still are resistant, you can always do it manually. Take your drum track and copy it, then paste 1 copy for each piece of a drum kit you have (snare, sidestick snare, kick, ride, etc.). (Add one more in case you screw up and have to go back to where you started.) Then starting in the first copy, delete all the notes but those in the topmost part (just for example's sake say its whatever part of the kit is assigned to C above middle C). Then go to the next one and delete all the notes but the ones in the next-lowest part. And so on, until you are done, and each copy you made has only one note value in the track. Mute or delete your back-up copy. Now you have x number of separate MIDI tracks, one per drum kit member, and you can now record them individually to separate audio tracks.

AlChuck has got the right idea on separating the drum voices. If you go that route here is a small time saving pointer: Go to piano roll view and click on the corresponding key on the keyboard on the left that goes with the part you want to delete. This will select that part throughout the whole track (you will see it change colors). The just hit your delete key and it is gone. Do this for every part until the one you want on that track is the only one left.

You guys kick butt with this thing. I ended having to record each MIDI track as an audio track one by one. Very time consuming but it worked! I think I will get the 'Cakewalk power' book since Cakewalk's manual is difficult for me to understand

I guess my next question should be a new thread.....but I'm lazy..

I want to cut out a bad audio pop in one track. If I left click it on the track view and choose delete, it deletes the whole track. I just wanna cut out the bad pop. Any ideas guys?

In the audio view, put your cursor just a tiny bit to the left of the spike and hit the S key. Then put the cursor a little to the right of the spike and hit S again. Now you can select the area between the two split points bring its volume down or whatever other edit features Cakewalk offers.

That will work but if for some reason you did not want to split the track you could also place the cursor to the left of the trouble spot, hold down the alt key, then drag with the mouse by holding in the left mouse button, then dragging to the right until you are in the desired spot. This way when you are done your track is edited and it is not spilt into three sections like it would be if you used the split method.

I have found the manual and the online stuff to be very good when I bother to read them. Garrigus has his own little cakewalk domain at http://www.garrigus.com if you want to talk with the author and cut out the middle man on your purchase. Auotgraphed copies may still be available!!!!!
