Windows Sound System

Help!!!
I am using Windows 98 for recording. I have Windows Sound System 'onboard' soundcard system. the trouble is, when I try to record sound using any recording program (Windows Sound Recorder, Cool Edit), the 'transport' does not work, ie the line does not move across the screen not recording any sound. Also, in playback programs, ie Cubasis, Magix, etc, the same happens, no sound, or just the 1st bit of sound played again ie derderderderder........etc.

Did you tell the "given" program to use a specific sound card?

Yeh, I did...I think I will try reinstalling Windows 98 unless anyone has a better idea??
