Control Change/Program Change/Bulk Dump

I use MIDI, but only to record music/mix/edit/pan/compress etc...

now I'd like to know what this: CONTROL CHANGE, PROGRAM CHANGE, BULK DUMP, SYSTEM EXCLUSIVE stuff is, I have a digital mixer and I'd like to see if it helps any.

What do these applications do that make them so special to want to use. LAMEN terms please

Control Changes are MIDI commands that select and alter various parameters. Bank select, Breath and Foot controllers, Mod wheels, volume, balance, pan, and various other controls fall within this group.

Program Change is the command that sets up a particular sound or patch on a particular channel. Patches are numbered either 0-127 or 1-128. When you change the Program Change value you should hear whatever instrument is assigned to the program number you enter.

System Exclusive and Bulk Dump:

SysEx messages are not directed at any particular MIDI channel but rather at the device as a whole. Manufacturers have been assigned ID numbers by the MIDI Manufacturers Association. When you dump SysEx information into your sequencing program that information only pertains to the stuff made by that one manufacturer. In order to operate more than one piece by any one company, they also provide device ID's for their various keyboards, modules, drum machines......

Bulk Dump is how you get the info from your module into your sequencing software. Cakewalk also allows for instrument definition files to be loaded, but you can do the same thing with a bulk dump.

I recommend getting the book THE MIDI FILES by Rob Young. This book offers the most in-depth explanations and practical applications of MIDI that I have found so far.

Thanks

I think I have that book already, but Thanks anyway

I just wanted to know was there a USAGE for it, in what I was doing. Apparently not, I understand the terminology, but from what I see it doesnt fit into what I need to do. In other words
it wont help me do anything faster, quicker, easier or time effective.

C7SUS, thanks buddy
