If you are recording digital, or any way for that matter, keep your signal chain short and sweet. For instance...
Which chain makes more sense?
A) mic -> cheap cable -> preamp -> cheap cable -> EQ -> cheap cable -> DOD distortion modelor version 3 -> cheap cable -> compressor -> cheap cable -> harmonizer -> cheap cable -> recorder.
or
B) mic -> good cable -> preamp -> good cable -> recorder

Do not use anything more in the signal path than what you need. All those extras add noise and degrade the signal quality. If you don't need em, take em out. If you are recording digital, you can add alot of those things later, digitally, without adding significant noise and junk. Use good quality shielded cable between everything. This helps more than you may think! Remember, a LITTLE bit of noise on one track adds up to ALOT of noise on 12 or more tracks.
In setup B, above, add an EQ or compressor IF NEEDED to control peaky stuff and keep from slamming your converters if you are recording digitally. Again, if you don't need it, take it out.
