Which amp to get?

I have a pair of Tannoy PBM 6.5's rated at around 60 watts per channel, and my tascam amp is about to croak, so i'm wondering what you all would recommend for a nexpensive amp. this is just a bedroom studio, so i don't need anything fancy, and my spending limit is $250-$300 max.

Any suggestions?

What's the down side of using a stereo reciever for monitoring and play back?

One of the dangers of useing a stereio reciever {amp} is that the The amp is of a lower RMS wattage, most likely.And when the signal cilps there go those tweeters .You can blow those easily from being under powered{some sort of square wave distortion}.I've toased a few in the past ..LOL

Ive seen a few models at Guitar Satan for cheap are these any good or just chaep haflers?

I got the Hafler TA1100, and it's doing a great job, I think it is a Guitar Center (or guitar Satan, if that's what you prefer) exclusive.

Get uh grip-

If you do go with a stereo receiver, get an Onkyo, Harmon Kardon or Denon, they have a much higher current rating, cheaper amps will not have the juice to drive lower ohm frequencies, which, if i am correct, (help me out here Bruce) are normally lower frequencies that eat all of your capacitor's stored-up-juice, leaving you with a thin imitation of the music. I almost got an Onkyo 8211 (I sell them, could have gotten a good price) but it was much bigger than i wanted for my studio and i watned a dedicated studio amp. I do know that the best known studio in the Annapolis, MD area is booked solid months in advance and he uses a damn JVC piece o'sh*t to drive his Tannoys and JBL's, so everything i just said is relative.

I sell Samson amps and my customers have had tons of problems with them, i'm not sure which model, but they are about 55wpc and $200.00, i refuse to sell them to anyone anymore. they get hums, distortion, easy clipping, fuses blowing, they sound thin, you name it. for the same price you can get an Onkyo 8211, which is a receiver/amp so you would expect it t osound "not as good", but when we did an A/B, it toasted the Samson... other people that sell them agree 100%

anyone else have problems with them?

I just bought a Hafler TA 1600 from GC and, after using a JVC stereo receiver for two years, I'm all smiles. It is clean and quiet.

If you are a good horse trader, you can pick one up for around $250, or you can probably get the TA 1100 for around $170.

I went for the TA 1600 because I wanted as much power as I could afford.

BTW, these are not GC exclusives. You can find them other places as well.

im currently using a older Nad reciever (i think rated at 50 watts)which seems to sound fine with my Event 20/20s,im curious would a Hafler ,etc make a huge difference for accurate monitoring?is this cost effective or would money be spent better elsewhere(mic pres,better mics,etc)

I've been using a Denon AVR3600. I thought eventualy the digital connections would come in handy. Thus far I think I've only succeeded in blowing the bootm end out of some Klipsch 301's.

What does everybody else use to have some input selection (cassette, phono, ect.)? Right now I'm running Darla outputs into receiver.

Powered monitors out of mixer won't work for me without some kind of preamp. Ditto with stand alone amp. Right?

What's the answer?

I'm using a 5 year old Hafler pro 1200.These things are built like a tank and the sound is very transparent.

I've been told (by salespeople) that using a reciever will throw off the sound/color it. Isn't that a big problem?

I have the alesis ra100...it's ok. I got screwed by the guy at mars so I think I'm going to take it back and get a tafler from GC. Built like a tank sounds good to me.
