Active pickups on bass for recording??

I heard that active bass pickups sound like crap when recording. I don't know if this is true, so could someone can please verifiy this!

Not just BS, that is some Active BS (besides being a generalization) but there is cheap active electronics and quality active electronics.

I have heard some good sounding passive bass ie, James Jamerson (motown), Duck Dunn and Jaco Patorious to name a few hot players before Active came in to being.
