(sigh)... ya know.. the more posts I read.. the more I realize I don't know what the hell I'm doing...

before I even begin to start saving for that DAW.. I need to admit to myself (and convince my wife) that I'm gonna need some decent monitors..

Since it's gonna be a few months 'til I have the cash.. can I at least record tracks while using Cerwin Vega stereo speakers as a reference? Or is this going to just create more problems that I'll hafta deal with at mixdown?

Track the best you can with those speakers and some good cans, and then don't bother mixing anything til you get your real monitors, and then use the other as an extra reference monitor.

Everybody who wants to can record anything using what they've got... its all good experience, the only thing you can catch from it is your mistakes, in which case, with every mistake you've learned something new.

Dude use the VEGAS untill you switch over. If you know what the speakers are like then it can be done. Learn what it sounds like and how it translates from you vegas to a pair of reference monitors then you'll know what to do when you play it through the vegas. Heavy bass in your vegas may mean perfect bass on a reference monitor. It's harder this way but some times you gots to work with what you gots

Unfortunately, the vegas are awesome stereo speakers in that there isn't much that doesn't sound good on them.. I had an eq setting that made cd's recorded on tape sound as good in the car as on the speakers.. I'll use that as a band-aid so I can listen to rough mixes while I drive.. but I won't even think about any real mixing until I get monitors...

I've already recorded a bunch of songs using the Vegas.. so it's a big relief that I can salvage what I've already recorded..

You should still practice mixing (on the Vega's). You could reference the mixes with your cans and in your car.
If your mixes wind up having too much bass, etc. or too little treble, etc. You could make adjustments on your receiver/board.
Once you learn how to translate what the Vega's are telling you, the easier it will be for you to mix on them.
The more mixing you do, the better you will get.
Plus, once you convince "your better half" that you need monitors.
You could use the Vega's as your secondary reference speaker.

So I figure in a couple months I'll have enough cash to try out the YSM-1's.. auditioning them in my Technics receiver..

Where's a good place to put the Vegas? The new monitors will be facing inwards in the two corners (not against the wall of course).. and I will be sitting at the head of the triangle.. or does it really matter for secondary monitors? Could I just stick them next to the YSM's without them getting in the way of the sound?
