Alesis BRC to [other]

I have a slew of Akai DR8 recorders, which has only a RS422 port on them.

I have a Tascam TMD-4000 mixer which has both the RS422 port as well as two Alesis ADAT sync ports.

What is the likelihood that I could connect my Alesis BRC to the mixer's transport, then in turn, connect the RS422 port of the mixer to the akai units, and use the wonderful interface of the BRC we like, with the Akai recorders that we also like.

I was unsuccessful in getting MMC/MTC from the BRC to the akai recorders to work them properly (arm, disarm, etc). Without any ADATs any longer, the BRC doesn't find any adats obviously, then just sits there with the power lights on

Thanks in advance for sharing your complex sync'ing stories.

Frederic

If I'm not mistaken

You could send MTC/MMC from the TMD4000 - let BRC receive, but still will send MTC (weird I know) then have the akai units slave?

If I'm not mistaken, I think you can do that on that board (if it isnt another one I'm thinking of)

Anyway, it sounds tough, due to the (Non-existing ADATS)
BRC- ALESIS, MD-4000-TASCAM, RECORDERS -- AKAI whewww!
thank god I have my ADATS to BRC to digital mixer

I can only wonder what your going through HEY! good luck

I was under the (perhaps mistaken) impression that the BRC required a connection to at least 1 ADAT with a loaded tape to generate sync...

I have been known to be wrong at times though!!!

So, the BRC talks to the mixer, and the mixer sends out MTC to the akai units? Or do I have it backwards to what you said?

Well, I like the BRC, and I sold my blackfaces (they were 16 bit) so I could upgrade from analog console to digital (which is two TMD4000's with adat cards and four TMD-1000's as keyboard mixers)

Thanks, its been a fun adventure so far. All of this because the slave Akai's don't follow the master one correctly. What a pain in the butt. And Akai's official answer... "We didn't implement that fully, during record, slave units will pop off the chain. use Midi, that works".

Aaaaauuuuurrrrrgggghhhh!

I am really hoping thats not the case - otherwise I have a useless BRC

I can have the BRC act as a slave, I think, and use the buttons to control the akai units, I think. I had something close to that at one point when I actually had blackface adats.

Thumbs up No, Bruce, you are right on.

The BRC does need an ADAT connected...it needs to "know" that the ADAT is locked and responding. There is a lot of bidirectional communication going on there...

Sorry the news is not better, Frederic.

Mike

we all been through it

Hey frederic, sorry to hear that your set-up is not lincable, well the fact still stands is that "YOU CAN STILL DO MUSIC"

there are a lot of different pieces there, but hey buddy, I'm more than sure MOST OF US have been through it also.
One point to check if purchasing any new gear --- make sure it's
compatible to your setup (via ADAT, SPDIF, TDIF, OPTICAL, BNC)

that's really the most important thing if purchasing an item with a different brand name other than what you have at home.
Prices on certain gear is tempting, but if not compatible that price means ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY ---NO--THING.

Yeah, you're absolutely right. I whipped the Cuepoint out of the closet and patched it in, as its more "BRC like" than the TMD-4000's transport controls, and hopefully its a shorter learning curve. See, we used to have eight blackface adats, which were sold recently, and the buyer didn't want the BRC so I was hoping to capitalize on three years of experience with the unit as not to have to learn anything new. We've gotten good at finding BRC buttons in near darkness quickly, intuitively, without looking at it. Maybe in time we'll feel that way about the cuepoint. Though the cuepoint doesn't have a nice stand

Absolutely agreed. Though so no one thinks I'm a complete idiot (partial idiot is okay ) we already had the BRC leftover from the adat farm days
