3630 salvage attempts?

RE: The 3630 "compressor" and the terrible things it does.

Unfortunately I have aquired two used examples of this gear before I found out that the marketing claims of "an industry standard" were delusions of granduer or referring to an industry I want nothing to do with. Before I found this web site I suspected my lack of experience with compressors was the culprit and read every article on compression use and technique I could find. Now I know these things are terrible especially on bass guitars (my main intrument).

My dilema is I cannot afford much else although I am scraping up for an RNC someday. Then I came acrross a web site for 'Pats Tube Schematics' where he sells upgrade schematics for various professional preamps and preamp kits etc. It got me thinking....is there anything worthwhile in this box that could be modified/replaced to achieve an interesting, usable or even, dare I ask.....pleasing result?

Call me an idealist but I feel guilty selling them, and although they may make help my tires get better traction if I get stuck in the snow... before I 'blow them up real good' I thought I would make a last fleeting attempt to get some use out of them.

Any one out there ever try this at home?
