I'm 42, and tonight...

I bought my first Beatles music. Abbey Road and Sgt. Peppers. Yep at 42. I had a couple albums as a kid (Magical Mystery Tour & Sgt. Peppers) but I think I stole them from my uncle and he stole them back at some point.)

That is all.

Nearly 50 and never bought or owned anything by the Beatles. Never understood what all the fuss was about....

I'm less than a year behind you Strat - my parents were Beatles freaks, and I heard it a lot growing up. I think I bought the CD of the White Album when it was released with serial numbers (and have since trashed it ) -- strangely, my 18 y o daughter is a much bigger fan than I ever have been.

Cool

I have never bought anything by the Beatles either. Never had to. Their music has been around me all my life. I have 5 sisters and 2 brothers and the youngest ones above me have almost always had something by them. I can remember listening to 'Let It Be' all the way through a few times. I had a friend make me a custom tape some years ago. We're inundated with it on the radio. Like I said, never felt a need to purchase it. Now the Yardbirds... that's a different story.

For some strange reason I find myself in total agreement with muttley. I better go take a pill or something.

I have pretty much all of the Beatles original vinyl albums and all of them were purchased within the time-frame of their original release dates. I don't think I ever bought one of their CD's because I had friends who bought them and made me good quality copies onto cassette. Unfortunately, pretty much all of my albums are totally worn out and scratched up at this point because as a kid, I didn't really look after my records the way they should have been and now that I have a very good top end Thorens turntable with a really nice Ortofon MC cartridge, I'm scared to play them and damage my needle!

Then again, I've heard all of their songs a couple of million times each so no biggie about not playing the LP's anymore.

Cheers!

This has always been my position--what's all the fuss about? At the risk of being lynched, I've always thought that the Beatles' success was as much about being in the right place at the right as it was musical talent/genius.

I was born in 66 and very into 70's rock--so the Beatles were for the old guys! Funny thing is, I think I bought them because I've gotten so deep into recording. I'm much more interested in actually studying recordings now--so I'm studying a bit of the Beatles now.

I grew up listening to the Beatles and as a musician have nothing in common with them, but I think they were amazing. I am flabergasted at how they could compose and record such masterpieces. George Martin was a huge part of their succes and sound.

I'm a seventies child...and I was never into the beatles much myself...Magical Mystery Tour the most entertaining of all for me...I think I preferred their music on an individual level, more than playing together...but..I've yet to sit down and study their music. That would most likely make a difference in my opinion of it...I think it is great, that you are now going to do that Strat! Please keep us informed on what you discover about it on a recording level as well as creative one.

The Beatles are one of those famous bands that people like because they think they're supposed to. No one says anything bad about them out of fear of being ridiculed.

Fuck the Beatles!

My Beatles collection is pictured below. I bought this when it first came out. The first time it was played it was transferred to reel to reel tape. The next time it was transferred to my computer and then to CD's. It's still in pretty good shape. The funny thing is that I really wasn't that much of a fan when they were the greatest thing on earth. I grew to enjoy them and their music as time went on though and was sad to hear of there split when it finally happened. Their first few albums though just seemed much like something that had been done before, think Everly Brothers. The first time I heard them the first thought was that they sounded just like the Everly Brothers.

No they aren't wrong. They're opinions. How can someone be 'wrong' when they say 'i don't like the Beatles'. I'm pretty sure they're spot on about their personal opinion right there.

And John Lennon was a big fucking egomaniac.

To add to that, Paul McCartney was, and still is, a bit of an idiot.

Harrison was pretty cool, but also pretentious.

Ringo was just a normal dude with a drumkit.

I love the Beatles' music. Currently reading two books that tell about business and studio details... have a shelf of books about them and their music. I play three dozen or so solo arrangements of their songs on guitar. To me a lot of Lennon/McCartney's work is more in the category of art song in the classical sense, than pop song.

Nice thread about the new releases here.

Also not a fan.

I agree that (imo) they were more of a timing instead of talent thang. Not that they weren't talented...just not as much to warrant this adulation.

I think some of the techniques or just "odd" things they did in the studio were kinda cool tho. Thinkin outside the box.

Absolutely. I'm sure I'd heard every song on them. Some I loved but don't get much airplay (Carry That Weight comes to mind) so I'm enjoying them

What's striking me so far is this: these are both later in their life as a band, and it's fun listening to what they did when they obviously weren't so concerned with being safe. With the confidence of having securely "made it" they were free to experiment, almost play around, and in the course of doing so made some very interesting music.
