Are there things you wouldn't do musically, if asked?

Are there things you wouldn't do musically, if asked?

For instance, does anyone in here remember the old "Schoolhouse Rock!" videos? Well, there was a CD that came out in the 1990's called "Schoolhouse Rock! Rocks".

It was a compilation of some of the old Schoolhouse Rock! songs, but done by 90's groups, like Better Than Ezra covering "Conjunction Junction", Blind Melon doing "Three Is A Magic Number", etc...

Would you do something like that, if asked?

Here's the track listing (except for track 1):

# "I'm Just A Bill" - Deluxx Folk Implosion
# "Three Is a Magic Number" - Blind Melon
# "Conjunction Junction" - Better Than Ezra
# "Electricity, Electricity" - Goodness
# "No More Kings" - Pavement
# "The Shot Heard 'Round the World" - Ween
# "My Hero, Zero" - The Lemonheads
# "The Energy Blues" - Biz Markie
# "Little Twelvetoes" - Chavez
# "Verb: That's What's Happening" - Moby
# "Interplanet Janet" - Man or Astro-man?
# "Lolly, Lolly, Lolly, Get Your Adverbs Here" - Buffalo Tom
# "Unpack Your Adjectives" - Daniel Johnston
# "The Tale of Mr. Morton" - Skee-Lo

Since you asked the question, I think you should be the first to answer it...

But to add my 2 cents: no one ever asked me to do anything musical.

I would do Interplanet Janet, but that's only 'cause we went to high school together.

I'll take Conjunction Junction

As far as other things, I would NOT perform Cage's 4'33" on the dolphin, because it's just too tempting to play those dolphins!

In some cases, yes, in some cases, I would probably have to think about it. In a situation like this (covering a "Schoolhouse Rock!" song), I would do that, sure!

I'd cover Schoolhouse Rock! (Anyone ever hear Veggie Tales Rock? There's a tune on there by Skillet that rocks by itself, but rocks to the point of laughing out loud when you know the original!)

It's called "Stand" and what makes it so funny is that Junior does the original--so it's this sweet little cute number, and then Skillet just crushes it!

When I'm playin' for me there's lots of shit I won't do - even if I know how.

Seriously, if you're a "pro" musician you do what they pay you for. If you're good enough to be selective about it, fine. Few of us around these parts fit in that category. In a typical working bar band like I'm in you pretty much have to play Mustang Sally.

I like getting paid to play.

I've thought about it. There is not much money in the local cover scene and it's a lot of work. The fun factor has to make up for it. It doesn't always. The problem is that if I quit now it's back to the basement.

At least in the basement you won't have to play cheesey bar cover songs.

Do you really believe those drunken slobs want to hear you play Mustang Sally yet again? Or are you just perpetuating the vicious circle for a handful of morons?

I have trouble believing they all would reject fresh songs if done well.

(my 2 cents)

Why not? If it were heartfelt, sincere, tastefully executed...most folks would appreciate the gesture I would think.

Or did you mean you wouldn't perform your own eulogy musically?
