Microphone volume with reaper
I am new to reaper and recording and I have a real simple recording set up at my house. I use Windows Vista, a Behringer UCA202 USB interface and a Shure SM58 to record my vocals and acoustic guitar I am just staring out.
So My question is how do i adjust the gain on the microphone or track when I am ready to record. I recorded a vocal track and it seems really low in Gain. So is there somewhere on reaper where you adjust the Track input/recording Gain Please help a Newbie out. Steven |

The UCA202 needs a line level input to work properly, for example, the level that you would be likely to get out of a mixer or a pre-amp. How are you connecting your mike to the interface? This is where your problem is most likely to stem from.

One of your problems might be using a dynamic microphone, might find it hard to get a decent level without a preamp with lots of gain.

I "third" getting a preamp. Mic level and line level signals aren't the same.
ART makes a cheap and decent tube preamp (ART Tube MP Studio) I used to have two of these and they worked great not only as mic preamps, but also as DI boxes. $29.99, not bad ![]() |

A quick solution is a xlr to 1/4 in cable and just recording through an amp.
its what i do. |

Mic, Instrument, and Line level signals are all different from each other. It's not just about volume. Not to mention the noise coming from the amplifier (among other things) will also degrade your mic signal. |
