Pancakes

Anything to watch out for with Pancakes? Anything tricky about setting up the reels?

Don't drop 'em. I bet you knew that though. Just be careful and place the pancakes between two flanges and go to it. I used to do this with several pancakes a day with no mishaps.

Yup...if they are in a box you can just lay one flange on and put the screws in place (if they are through-the-hub screws), close the lid of the box, flip it and then open the other side of the box and put the other flange on. Its easier if it is a precision hub and each flange screws on separately. Then you can even screw the first flange on, close the box, flip it and mount just like that...open face tape reel and spool it on to a complete reel. You can carry pancakes around too but I'd be nervous doing it with 1/4" tape. 1/2" and especially 1" tape pancakes are pretty stable if well-packed.

I used to play with 2-4 pancake projects a day and always just (carefully) picked up the pancake (holding it vertically) and mated it with the flange in the vertical position. I would then place it on the horizontal tape machine (at that time I was working with Studer B-67's and an Ampex ATR-100) and drop the other flange into position (never using any screws and saving tons of time). If the machine was one of our vertical machines (Otari MX5050) I would pretty much do the same, but that required being a bit more careful because the tape could spill more easily. On the vertical machine I would mate the pancake with the first flange, place it on the machine and then place the second flange over the pancake. Once you get that first flange in place it's really quite simple in either format.
