Help!!! 'MIID Drum' Problems!!!

Hi all,

I hope you can help me with this problem as its driving me up the wall! I have a Creative Vibra sound card. Here's my problem, no matter what sequencer i go into, I can for example go to MIDI chanell no 4 (or whatever chanell) and change it to any of the other 127 MIDI instruments. Now heres the problem: if I go to the 'Drum' chanell (usually assigned to number 10) and select another drum sound for example, 'Jazz Set Drum' or 'SFX Drum' or any of the other 127 drum sounds, it simply will not change to the new drum sound I have selected. It seems that it is defaulting to the one drum sound. What can I do? Is this a MIDI conflict or somthing to do with my sound card?

Any ideas will be greatfully appreciated...

You can only have one sound per channel. That is, your sound can be a drum kit "Jazz Set", but you will have to use that kit as long as you are doing all of your drums on just channel 10. You can record several tracks of channel 10 using different sounds from "Jazz Set".

I still don't understand why this is happening because last year i had a different PC with a different sound card and i could go to my drum chanell and select any of the other 127 drum sounds no problem. On my new PC when i do this it just keeps defaulting back to the one drum sound, do you have any other ideas or ways I could work around this to change to any of the other drum sounds? When you say that it is defaulting to to the same drum sound, do you mean that it keeps playing a snare or do you mean that it continues to play the same drum kit? What sequencer are you using? What keyboard are you using to access the sounds?

Landie is correct.... on any particular channel you can only have one "sopund" at a time. A drumkit (with a number of different hits) is usually considered a sound.... (sorry if this is too basic), so where a piano will have a piano mapped to a c-d-e-f-g a drum kit may have snare to c, kick to d, high hat to e etc. If you want to play the snare... you figure out which note triggers the snare in that drum kit and play that note etc.

If you already know that consider this: If it seems that you can't change "instruments" perhaps Cakewalk is sending out a "patch change" command to call up a specific patch. Or is Cakewalk rechanneling all of you midi notes to play a specific note (I am not sure that could be done in real time, but a cal program or using the invert filter could make that happen). I know those are longshots, but........

Again thanks for your patience in trying to help out here. Im using MicroLogic Fun. When I say that it is defaulting to to the same drum sound, I mean that it continues to play the same drum kit. I have attached a screen shot to show how I would select another 'Drum Kit' but it ignores if I select another kit and just seems to play a default kit even if the channel name has changed to a kit I selected eg, 'Electronic' or 'Jazz set'. If you guys could figure out how I can access any of the other 'drum kits' (which you can see in the screen shot) you would be saving my sanity!
