reaper latency problem

I posted this in the reaper forum. Has anyone experienced the same issue? Seems like reaper's latency makes it worthless to track with.

Hmm.. Not here. I'm tracking at 4ms with my firepod.

It looks like steindork is helping you out a bunch. I don't have any other suggestions other than what's posted there. As you said, it's working with sonar and vegas with no problems. All I can think of is looking into the latency compensation settings in reaper's preferences. There are other options that deal with multi-processing as well. Might wanna look into those.

When I first installed reaper (or any program for that matter) I went into the settings and adjusted them the best I could.

Don't worry, you won't break anything. Even if something does screw up, you can always delete the settings file and start over.

I really hope you get it working. The progam is absolutely amazing. The guys at the reaper forums are great and will stick with you to get things figured out.

Good luck!

I'll post here what i just posted on the reaper forum:

Ok, so I've played around with the settings, and the best latency I can get is 39ms with plugs, 16ms without, still not like sonar or vegas. Looks like reaper techs have some work to do, for comparison. It's the old cliche you get what you pay for, I guess. Thanks for the help anyways guys, I'll stick to what I got. Cheers. Gordy.

I'm so puzzled by this.. Sorry you couldn't get it working. Like I said, I'm tracking at 4ms and I know of many others who can get even lower and it "just works."

It's not really a matter of "you get what you pay for" seeing as the commercial license is $200+ but oh well, you have to remember, it's only at v3 vs Sonar, PT, etc.. are at v8.

Good luck in your daw search! I hope you find one that suits you

It is highly unlikely that your latency problems have anything to do with Reaper itself.

The most common source of latency problems are in the interface or its configuration, or how you are using the software.

For example, if yo are using software monitoring you are more likely to experience latency problems than if you are using the interface's hardware monitoring. If you are using a GM Wavetable to create your midi voices, this is likely to be subject to latency.

Are you experiencing this problem with other applications? Try downloading some of the free ones and see what results you get.

Your problem Gordy me old mucker is system related, not software related and with your one dimensional way of thinking...it's no wonder.

ps...version 3.05 update is now available which concentrates on processing issues.

This may seem reaaly obvious, but did you tell reaper to use asio drivers? It's not enabled by default.

Thank you d.bop, but like I said, I already have been using Vegas without the issue that I'm having with Reaper. Vegas = 8ms, Reaper = 16ms. I've read a lot of compliments about Reaper and just wanted to try it. Yeah, I have reaper set on asio drivers (Asio4all).

I am monitoring though the interface, not through the sound card. The interface is a Peavey PV-10 USB Mixer. I haven't had a chance to try midi within Reaper.

Thanks for the info on the update, I'll check it out, but...... WTF? Dude, one dimesional thinking!!?? How did you gather that from just a few posts on a message board? Seriously, if that was the case, I would've gave up on it upon the first problem I had, wait, I wouldn't even be trying new software, since the one I have works already. Forgive me for having an open mind! LOL! I digress. I really appreciate everyone taking the time to help, but Mart, if you don't have anything nice say, or anything constructive to provide, then don't bother. It's not worth getting into an debate over.

Cheers. Gordy

I used to work exclusively with Logic, but I've progressively been switching to Reaper, with which I'm seriously impressed. I also use Vegas for video work, though not for recording.

I've not experienced latency problems, and I'm struggling to find further possible causes for your problem. I usually leave the interface latency for my Firepod at its default setting of 10ms, though I have recorded successfully at 3ms. However, I am using the Presonus Firepod drivers, not ASIO4all.

Perhaps its something to do with the Peavey USB interface?

While I don't discount the possibility that Reaper may be the source, I can figure out how it could be.

You'd given up before even recieving a reply dude and seemed to make your mind up that Reaper is worthless...then to add...you have latency problems with Reaper and despite others saying they don't...you do so it must be Reapers fault...and then once again you go on to slag the program because it's not commercial and again, despite others telling you they don't have latency problems...you do so it must be Reaper.

Sorry mate but that sounds very narrow minded to me and I was actually 'tongue in cheek' anyway. In other words...slow down abit dude before you start referring to us as cheapskates which is what you're basically doing when you say 'you get what you pay for' after telling us the program we use is worthless. This is a Reaper section remember. I have Sonar but once I tried Reaper...I never went back.

Look, I can't help you with your latency problem cause I know nothing about it as I don't use Reaper for tracking, but I know that whatever problem you have, it's not directly related to Reaper but more to your version running on your machine. So I hope you don't give up and I wish you luck with finding the problem...that's what computing is all about afterall.

Mart.

Latency comes from your SOUNDCARD and its DRIVERS ..... NOT from the application.

And a Realtek soundcard has about 40 cents worth of chips in it.

A POS gamer card is your problem, not Reaper....

Second. It's the card and drivers. Been there.....done that. I'm running Reaper at 2.0-2.4ms with 1 gig mem and a 1.6gig AMD processor. The card I use is a M-Audio 2496. I had a SB Extreme Audio X-Fi card and ASIO4All and the latency was a joke.

Change the card.

Then it is impossible to be hearing any software latency at all. Go to the reaper chat and youll be sorted in minutes
