Wink Soooooo Close To Recording!

Hey guys! I've learned that with the more stuff I get, the more complications I have. Right to the point though, I have been stuck having to chose between the XMAX pres (FP10) or the DMP3's Pres. I was thinking about using the DMP3 pres for the first two channels and the FP10s pres for the last 6 (only when recording drums). First off, have any of you had the opportunity to test out both of these? If so, what is your opinion of each compared to eachother? My next question, is that if I do decide to go to the DMP3 for vocals and acoustic/electric guitar for the first 2 channels, or drums or w.e I want to use it for, how would I hook up the DMP3 to the FP10 so I could use it for the first 2 channels and the last 6 be the firepod. Thanks and any input will be GREATLY appreciated. Have a great week!

I don´t have the dmp3, so I can´t tell you about those...
If you wanna bypass FP10´s pres you have to connect dmp3´s outputs into the Line Input on the back of the pod...

I have a firepod and 2 Ms1b's. I leave the Ms1b's hooked up to the line in's on channels 1&2. The firepod pre's only have 54 db of gain and even at that they get noisy past about 3 o'clock position. I bought the Rane's because they have 66db of gain. On condenser mics there isn't much difference but for dynamics I think you'll need the extra gain of the dmp3 (also has 66db of gain). I've never used a dmp3 but from what I understand it's not real noisy at higher gain levels.

And if you can't tell the difference, why worry yourself about it?

It's VERY quiet. 66db, and it's decent even when you crank the gain to max. I dont think you can beat it until you start getting into pres 3 times the price and up.

DO you realize how crazy that is?
SO many new guy's want somthing because another guy say's it is good...Not matter where you look ther will be people bashing a piece of gear and people praising it..If it sounds good it is good, thats a thing to live by...how can some one tell you what you like!!

I like my map gold, some people hate the shit out of it, but all that matters is if I like it!!

Wow... take it easy on the guy... I think he's looking for a comparison between the pres on both units to decide whether he should be buying a seperate pre at all... If he buys it, it's bought... then there's no decision.

I would pick up just the interface to start...listen to those pres, than decide whether your happy enough with your two primary channels...

If I understand you correctly...

I have a DMP3 and a Delta 44. Would I cut a demo with it, heck yeah. Would I cut a commercial album with it and expect it to compete with other similar entities, probably not.

I've used my DMP3 as input to my Korg MR-1000 just to test it out. And I couldn't really tell much difference between those two. Yeah, the built in pres of the Korg seem better. But AB'd against each other and I'd have a hard time distinguishing the two on conventional speakers.

By reputations only the DMP3 might be slightly better than the FP10 pres. But I wouldn't really expect any night and day AB comparisons between the two. At one point I had an Art Tube MP preamp and the DMP3 definitely smokes that one.

That might just work.

Everyone's ears are different, but to me the DMP3 is definitely prettier sounding than the XMAX in a sparse mix. But too many channels of DMP3 and you will probably have to EQ out some low mids. The XMAX pres seem to have very little of that build up, but are not as pretty as the DMP3 soloed.

I have done acoustic guitar with one track of each preamp, and they compliment each other nicely.

For my use, the XMAX pres seem to do well on drums.

Hope this helps, but as I said, everyone's ears are different.
