sleeper cab?

I saw someone online refer to a guitar cab as a 'sleeper cab', what exactly does that mean?

Never heard that term in reference to guitar amps. A TRUCK sleeper cab is, of course, the extension of a long-haul semi-truck's cab, that has amenities like a bed, reefer (no, not THAT kind), dresser cabinet, etc.

Perhaps someone was confused?

Maybe like it does more than it looks? Was it plain and unassuming looking? People used to describe cars as sleeper cars, like when, say, a Pinto had a big monster engine under the hood. You'd laugh at it while sitting at a stop light then the thing would blast off like a rocket when the light turned green.

probably just a cab that they believe to be a good value (i would guess that they were referring to either an Avatar cab or a Lopo cab, or cabs from any number of small builders that have popped up), or yeah-- a guitar cab you can sleep in.

I think you're on the right track. Per dictionary.com:

6. merchandise that is not quickly sold because its value is not immediately recognized.

So, something that's better than it appears..

You remember the metalhead's walls of Marshall cabinets?

You don't really think all of them were hooked up, do you?

The "unhooked" ones aren't dummies, because they do work, but since they aren't being used they are sleepers.

At least, that's how I've heard the term used...

Yeppers. I worked the stage for a Metallica show one time, and out of the 27 Marshall cabs they had, only three were real. The rest weren't even cabs, just lightweight empty boxes with Marshall logos on them, which we appreciated when we had to unload them from the semi trailer.

In the old days the big Ampeg bass cabs had beds inside. Musicians would sleep in them to save money on hotels when they were on tour.

Refrigerated carrier, like a semi trailer or rail car.

It's trucker slang for a refrigerated trailer. I worked for a trucking magazine back in the '70s, and one early morning at a heart attack cafe in St Louis one of us casually mentioned "a 40-ft reefer." The waitress' eyes got real big, and she said, "a forty-foot REEFER?"

Well, it seemed funny at the time.

Correct as that may be, I'd guess that's not what anyone using the word is referring to 99.5% of the time !

Actually, I haven't heard that term for a "funny cigarette" in conversation for 30 years or more.

I wonder if any appliance store

has ever advertised a refrigerator sale as 'reefer madness'?
