mexican vs. american geddy lee jazz bass

I've got a friend interested in the geddy lee signature bass. He was able to find the mexican made one for significantly less. Is there any big difference between the two? Would it be worth while to go for the mexican?

I could be wrong but I believe the Geddy Lee signature is made in Japan.
No mim or American versions.
