"The Truth Is Out There"

Hey guys,

I just finished this song and could use some feedback on the mix. This is the first song done with a full band using my new recording gear. Was recorded live in the sanctuary of my church with only vocals and one of the guitar tracks overdubbed...it has been a challenge to mix.

I am open to your wisdom...and it is appreciated.

A 192 Bit version can be downloaded direct at www.daysofrain.ca/TheTruthIsOutThere.mp3 or it is available on soundclick at www.soundclick.com/curtismechanuck

Thanks.

Drums are too quiet.

The intro to the song has some timing issues with the guitars and drums.

I like the guitar sound.

I detect some meaningful timing problems throughout. I also think that you should work on the drums a little more. The EQ'ing isn't quite there yet, especially with the kick. Voice is also pitchy here and there. One thing every home-recording hobbyist should always keep in mind is that the performance has to be right to make a good mix. Record everything right at source and you will find, by the time you get to mix, it'll all be much easier. Just take your time with tracking.

Just my opinion, hope it didn't hurt....

Joey

Bass drum sound very weak - like hitting the foil seal in a can of Milo.
The snare & toms over power the BD & HH.
Timing is really go to let the song down.
The guitars seem a little weak so far behind the drums & bass.
Vocals - well what Joey said.
I think the band should sit down & critically listen to this mix to evaluate their performances and plan how they approach re recording it.
Will you use a click track?
What can you do to check pitch as you go?
Will you go live?
Will you set up a guide track?
The mix is unbalanced (some of which may well be room issues) but the real issues are performance based.
Sit down together & listen with each critically assessing their own performance - not blaming each other.
Could be really good if you work on it!

Thanks for the great feedback...

I am going to re-work a few parts to help the timing and vocals...that shouldn't be too big of a deal.

The general concensus on boards that I have posted the song seems to (primarily) be issues with the drums and I am not really sure what to do to give them more "oomph"...incidentally, they were Roland V-drums, a lower end version, so there was only a stereo out, so I can't mix any of the pieces seperately without starting completely from scratch...an option, though not the most desirable. Being pretty new to this, I'm not sure how to adjust frequencies without muddling up the rest of drum mix.

Any thoughts?

this site has a very useful chart and tutorial regarding EQ:

http://ca.geocities.com/shastu@roger...eqsettings.htm

I found it quite usefull when I started out. Of course it is a guideline, so you'd still have to tweak here and there, but it's a good start.

The saga continues...

I reworked a couple parts and mucked around a little more with the mix...dunno if I am on the right track now or not. I think it is an improvement but I have been at it for awhile and might have a little exhaustion going on...

I bow to your continued wisdom...
