Porta 02 squealing problem

I've recently bought a Porta 02 4-track recorder and have been playing around with it the last couple of days, but today whenever i try to record i just get a high pitched squealing noise that just drowns out whatever i'm recording. it starts as soon as i press record and gets louder the higher i raise the slider or trim knob.

I may be answering my own question here, but yesterday in order to record my guitar amp quietly i used the headphone output instead of the DI. this was only once for around a minute at most. after reading the manual again yesterday i saw a warning against doing this saying that it will almost certainly cause problems and not to do it (i had read the manual a couple of time before trying to record anything, but must have not noticed or forgotten this warning). i changed tapes to check that they weren't the problem and it is definately the unit itself.

So, do you think it is definately the headphone socket which has caused the problem? and is there any way to fix it? or have a just broken it?

Thanks.

look up a tascam authorized service station near you.
If is less than a year old,you might get fix under warranty.
If not, we might be looking at one hour labor plus part.
