Celotex Soundstop

Hi, has anyone here ever come across or had any experience with Celotex Sound-stop fibreboard in regards to isolation. I was at a supply yard getting acoustical caulk and the guy there asked me if I wanted some, here is a link with some info on it.

I don't know about that stuff but I've heard great things about Green Glue.

The pdf's make the product look like you would be dumb not to buy it. A friend of mine used it in an isolation booth build about a month ago, honestly, my drum room isolates sound better than his booth. He used the method shown in their pdf that advertises 60+ db reduction in sound transference. (Single stud wall design 4.5" thick). He spent twice as much as I did on my double stud wall (12" thick, 2.25" decoupled slot between the 2 frames).

You will find that there is no replacement for mass when trying to reduce sound bleed. But, who knows... YMMV.

Exactly. I wasn't advocating using Green Glue on a single wall system. Just saying that a lot of people talk highly of it. And really, that many people and honest testing can't be wrong. Like anything, you have to use it in the right situation. Otherwise, it's pointless. It's like building a 2 leaf system and then bracing the inside leaf directly with the outside leaf. You totally negate the point.

What's the point in using Green Glue in a single wall system? You aren't going to get much isolation that way. You're still transferring the energy that way. Green Glue works better (and has been tested to) in a 2 leaf system. And it works better in a 2 leaf system than a 2 leaf system without it.

This is what confuses me about your previous statement. A SINGLE WALL system CAN be a TWO LEAF assembly. It can also be a ONE LEAF assembly...as in a DOUBLE WALL/TWO LEAF ASSEMBLY..each wall is a ONE LEAF of a TWO LEAF assembly.

Green glue is designed to make TWO or more LAYERS of drywall act as ONE complete layer(I believe it changes the "incidence dip")...as in 2 layers of 5/8" drywall act as one integeral layer 1 1/4" thick. This can be on a ONE LEAF or TWO LEAF system..it doesn't matter. What DOES matter, is two things. That a wall assembly IS TWO LEAF, regardless if it is a SINGLE or DOUBLE framing assembly. In a SINGLE assembly, both leafs are connected via studs, with a single airgap. This is whats known as a MAM system.
i.e ..MASS/AIR/MASS. So is a DOUBLE framing/2 leaf assembly. The main differences are a deeper airgap, and one leaf is "decoupled" from the other by virtue of seperate framing systems. Regardless of the type framing OR number of leaves, Greenglue will make 2 layers perform better than two layers without it.

Yes, I did. I just wasn't sure it was called a one leaf system or not. So I didn't wanna use it.

Thanks Guys for the replies, I guess I'll just go with the 1/2" plywood. The guy quoted me $11.20 for an 8"x4" of the celotex which I thought was a good price, if it did what they said in the PDF's, I just don't want to make a blunder at this part of the build (stud level) my original plan was to do 1/2" plywood then peacemaker by audimute finished with 5/8" drywall.

I have thought it quietly to myself while reading his responces to people. But after reading hundreds of threads in which he has offered help, I began to understand (to a degree) why the posts sound snarkey... He has the information though, and his willingness to help nublets - even with an air of condescension - greatly outweighs his blatant disregard for human emotion.

yea, about a zillion times..especially by my wife I'm Irish...whatta ya expect?

But let me give you some insight into my character...I'm 64, Irish, married, semi-retired, pissed at the mods for not giving any attention to this forum by making stickys..FOR YEARS...even though I've posted a zillion drawings showing MOST everything there is about building studios, I smoke, drink, and generally am a cranky old crudgmudgen who doesn't give a flying fuck what anyone thinks, cause my work here speaks for itself. PERIOD. I may fly off the handle sometimes, but mostly I'm good natured...untill SOMEONE pushes a button. I'm an expert CAD/3d person, a journeyman MILLWORK detailer/builder, a 40 yr guitarist, 20 yr home recordist and I don't pull punches, cause in the real world, around real peers...they don't either. So get a thicker skin dudes.

Just use 2 layers of 5/8" drywall, with Greenglue if possible, staggered joints, first layer horizontal, second layer vertical(or vice versa...caulked all joints, tape and texture, herringbone joints at wall/ceiling....and be done with it. Of course, there is RC, RSIC connectors..double/staggered wall framing and other details too numerous to mention here. Like electrical masspacks, door jamb/threshold/casing details, door/window weaklink syndromes...ductwork and other flanking paths...geesze, maybe ya oughta make a list of your rooms details and take a 2nd look at these before commiting the shiething.

I have literally tons of detailed drawings, to scale, with many views in the form of a Studio Isolation/construction assembly set, Geometry set, Treatment set, Detail set, Millwork/Fixture building set, Idea sets including how to's(machining, materials, products layouts) and Diamond Theory set, Equipment/Wiring set, and a few more. These are in Sketchup 3D jpeg format as well as links to my own hosted Sketchup .skp files(models) for
loading into peoples own Sketchup program for viewing as well as altering for their own purposes. Not to mention links to the Sketchup 3d Warehouse for downloading literally thousands of usefull PRE-DRAWN models relevant to Home Studio building. I'll post a few on a thread for you to view and decide. If you want to see the complete sets, let me know. However, I'm still in the process of reformating and compressing these sets, and compiling the set links. Anyway, thanks for the offer. I'll be posting a few of these in the next few days.

It sounds great to me. There's a consensus among the mods to limit what becomes a sticky. I guess the reasoning is, if we sticky everything then nothing would stand out. So, I'll ask you to put everything you want into one post, I'll sticky it, then ask the others for their opinion.

I think you had a sketchup tutorial somewhere. I wouldn't mind that being a sticky also. I have tried my hand at it and I can't get the quality drawing that you have posted.

Hey Rick, just wanted to say wasup and thanks for all your insight- we are almost finished with our building, and I applied some of your techniques. I am glad this opp came along for you as well, it is neat to watch it unfold.
