Hello and Thanks
Hi Everyone, I just want to take this opportunity to Say HI and thanks for posting all the valuable info here on the site. I have been playing professionally for twenty years and some change and have been part of a lot of recordings but that is really as far as it goes so I recently hooked up with an old friend whom I had played with in the past and he was telling me how far digital recording has come and the possibility of collaborating from afar was easier than ever before. So I have a room that has basically been a big garbage staging area for a while and I have decided that it is going to become a drum room/mixing room and generally somewhere I can go to keep my chops fluid. I did go out an purchase a Motu 8 Pre to interface with my Imac which is also new. It seems like I have been spending money for a long time and there's a way to go!
I'm not one to do things half assed so when I got into the room I stripped it to find that it is half concrete block and half stud and has aluminum siding on the outside. So, the house needed a facelift and I have decided to put stucco were all the siding is. Since the room is down to the studs/block I got to thinking that I should try to isolate the room, well about two weeks of studying how that is achieved, I looked into mass loaded vinyl "WOW" well that was probably going to cost about $2,000 so I was looking for alternatives and came across a product Called Peacemaker by a company called Audimute. This product does not have the effect of MLV but was all I could spring for, it is somewhere in the region of $1.00/sq/ft. It is 2 millimeter thick and I have about 650 sq/ft to do the ceiling and all the walls, seal it up so to speak. In the parts of the room where it is studs I plan to fill cavity with R13 and then cover with 1/2" plywood and seal with USG accoustic caulk and then cover with Peacemaker and seal that, then 5/8" drywall and seal, isolating the floors and ceiling with the caulk before mudding. The floor of the room is concrete and I have not come to a decision yet what I should do with it. I have two windows in the room that are new, they are double glazed with Low E and filled with argon gas, I'm not sure what significance that has if any, regarding soundproofing but I'm just throwing it out there so I can get feedback. One window is 4' x 6' and might be 2'x 3' I have read somewhere that you can make a window plug from soundboard sandwiched between two pieces of drywall? there are 2 doors, which are going to be solid core, one of the doors leads to the outside as I want to be able to come and go with equipment without going through the house and the other door leads to the laundry room and I plan on a solid core there. I have already started to make some diy basstraps with Johns Manville 6lbs/sq/ft min wool I plan on making these 4"x24"x48" and I have figured that I will have 16 when I am done, I also am planning on building a drum riser from 2x4 and MDF, I'm thinking a 6'x8' riser but I think that will engulf the room too much so I might go with a 6'x6'. I think I read it on here that someone had discovered a company selling epdm rubber stoppers I think I will just cover the base with them? For monitors I have KRK 8" g2's and a KRK 10" sub and I just got a Euphonix MC control for Logic, which I have still to acquire. My Buddy has given me all the training DVDs for logic so I am trying to get my head around that so I'll have a little leg up by the time I get the program. I hope some of you will be gracious and give me some feedback.thanks, Nick . Last edited by celtwats; 04-22-2009 at 16:05.. |

Hi Nick I hope you are right about the easy going! I'm all about it. I'm going to try to get some pics of the room together and post them as I know that it would be difficult to comment on something that you cannot see! So do you have a room at home?
Nick. |

Yeah, I have been doing my "studio build" for about 3 months or so.
http://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=277812 I am going to be uploading some more pics in the very near future. I took a few last night with the new layout, so once I convert them to itty bitty size I will upload them in that thread. Nick |
