Anyone see that Weezer used all POD Pro's on SNL?

I don't have a POD and think Weezer is ok. Don't really have an opinion on this, just thought it was interesting.

No amps, no speakers, just a couple pods. It seems that on this board and other places over the past year I have read more than one post regarding "how do I get that weezer sound" . Well, there's your answer.

Any thoughts on this?

No comment on the POD issue, but Weezer's new song is absolute garbage.

Rivers fucked up.

He had like 5 years to write a new album, and he fucked up. It's OK, but not the caliber I was expecting. I love the first album, second album is good, but not as good as the first. This one makes me weary of anyting in the future.

i really liked the first album and HATED the second album. I thought they were done, and nothing they played on SNL would make me change my mind. It was better than the second album but fairly generic I thought.

Ok every one who just bagged Wezers new album sucks!
Look at what they have done. The blue album came out when grunge was cool, with it's crappy, unpolished sound. Out of nowhere apears Weezer with this poppy, slick album. Then Pinkerton came out. A very honest and back to the roots sound. The drum sound (not playing) resembles led zepplins, then sound lots of guys jerk off thinking about it. The green album is great, and no it didn't take 4 years to write. The toured from it for a year and a half to two years, wrote and recorded an album, scraped it, Rivers got braces, wrote the green album and that takes us to today. You're probably pissed that the new Tool albom took so long too!

As for the question on the weezer sound, you need Will Farrel to dress up like Mickey and play shakers and you're set! Seriously, Rivers plays mostly fender and Brian plays mostly gibson, both usually through a couple of marshalls.

They should have released the first 4 songs on the green album as an EP, cause the rest of the album is FUCKING FILLER MATERIAL!... One thing I respect, is they haven't changed there style.... Not like all those metal hair bands who changed to alternative..... I was sure weezer was going to put out a rap/rock record like Rage or something..... Anyways.. I want my $16.99 back!!!!!!!!!!

POD's RULE!!!

The first album might have come out at a good time, but ti was BETTER material. A whole lot better material, then anything they've done since. Pinkerton was good, but it didn't thave what the first album did. This new album is just crap. Maybe the didnt change their genre, but they wrote bad songs. Sorry guys, I'll still love and cherish the first album, and pinkerton will get it's play time in my stereo, but this new one is nothing more then a coaster.

Jake

PS. - Yeah, I did think Tool took a long time for this new album, but I have been a fan since Undertow, and to say the least, it was worth the wait. I didn't go around and complain about the 5 or 6 years it took Tool, or the 3 or 4 it took Weezer, but at elast the new Tool CD was worth the wait.

Oh yeah, and the Weezer sound:

Rivers doesnt play Fender, he plays a Warmoth custom Strat Copy. (http://www.warmoth.com)

The first album is almost all a Mesa out of a Marshall "big boy" cab. (Looks like an 8x10", but really just a 4x12").

The first album was doen with many different guitars, but mainly a Les Paul Jr. (he didn't have his Warmoth yet).

Pinkerton: Big Muffs

New Album: No idea, don't especially care. They do use Marshalls when playing live. That mesa from the first album had an accident on tour and never sounded the same. The Randall cab (looks like a Marshall) on the inside cover of the Blue Album just sold on e-Bay for like $250.

Yeah, but what you gotta understand is that when you come out with such a kick ass album as Weezer's first, it's damn hard to come back with an album that's just as good or better. But I agree with most of the replies to this post: The second and third albums do suck pretty bad. But here's the bottom line: when you get signed by a major label and write and record stuff with inspiration from the gutter where you were when you were playing in your garage, the material does usually kick ass. Success changes you man. Your inspiration, your material. Success changes it all.

I totally understand what you're saying. The change on the 2nd album was expected. The change for this album was just disgusting.

Cool

Im not a big Weezer fan, but I have one opinion on why the used the Pod on SNL....take the amps they usually use on the stage in that small ass studio and crank them (which you have to do to get any kinda balls) and the soundman will quit.....only feasable reason I see.....

In the past I've seen bands perform on those late night TV shows, and they turn the amps around backwards, facing away from the crowd. Honestly, I think that it was a good idea to use the POD's. Just realized I never even talked about the true subject of this thread.

Yeah, Weezer probably had their amps offstage and brought in a rack of dummy Pods to make us dipshits talk....I wonder if they had a Behringer mixer.....

Yeah. We used to do this in smaller venues. Worked great for getting a good mix.

Especially in this bar that used to be a strip club. The stage was behind the bar and we'd have the bartenders walking around at our feet. The place was open until 4am so we always got a huge spillover from bars in other states that closed at 2-2:30.

ok, here's my comment.

the new weezer album is a good come back album for them...though it is rather disappointing. the song writing on Pinkerton is much better than the first album, and takes a while to grow on you. It was also self produced, so they had alot more freedom, now with this album i think the record label may have been a little more strict becuase pinkerton didn't do well commercially, though i love it, it has that nice home feel, not over produced. they used Ric Ocasek, from the Cars, who also produced their first album.

i think weezer is an awesome band, who can write some great melodies. not all bands need to be about finger-tapping and big hair. even if they don't do well in the mainstream, =w= is going to be around for a long time.

the POD's were a great idea. it looked like they had two each for guitars.

2 cents

First off, I think the new weezer album is ok and a welcome change from the pabulm crap currently out there...is it up to Pinkerton...no, but then that wasn't commerically successful anyway. I could leave tracks 4-8 on my box for a couple of days.

Second, regarding Pod Pro's...I use a Pod when playing live sometimes, and it has to do with convenience...I don't feel like micing a live amp especially for smaller venues and gigs...maybe they found a comparable sound and just said "screw it - put the rack of stuff in the thing, carry it all on a plane, and set up in 3 minutes..." - and those idiots at SNL can't mix a hard alterna-rock band to save their lives.

Does it really matter what people use on stage, in the recording room or out in the rain? What sounds good, is what matters, its just that weezers new stuff sounds like garbage.

Record me six years ago before I knew how to play guitar, learning the song "glycerin" by bush and thats how good weezers new album sounds!!!!

Pod ROcks!!!
