1/4" 8 track reel to reel decks?
I know Fostex had some models - are there any other manufacturers that produced these decks? Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

That's a perceptive question, but there's only one answer:...
The Tascam 388...........

I just got my hands on a Studer A807 but it needs to be restored. Can't complain tho, it was free.

+100 to the 388. Head and shoulders above any of the Fostex 1/4 inch machines. Prettier too

So Dave, was the 388 the only other deck aside from the Fostex and, I assume, the Studer mentioned by telefunkin? Does the 388 run 7.5 and 15 or 3.75 and 7.5 ips?

Aside from Fostex (A8, A8LR, Model 80, R8, E8) the only other 1/4" 8-track out there is the Tascam 388.
The Studer A807 I don't think is 1/4" 8-track, but obviously is 1/4". I think in context our friend just wanted to tell us about his new freebie. More likely the A807 is a 1/4" 2-track mastering deck. I'd have to verify that. ![]() ![]() The Tascam 388 runs 7.5 ips. Aside from Fostex, as mentioned in your preface, the only other 1/4" 8-track game in town is the 388.

The A807 comes in a 4-track variant, though I think it's always 1/2". There is also the C278 which is an 8-track variant but again, is 1/2". There is no 8-track 1/4" version. I suspect Telefunkin posted in the wrong thread by accident or something.
So yes, as far as I'm aware only Fostex and Tascam produced 1/4" 8-track machines. |

Thanks Dave and JP. I was figuring I might have missed someone that produced one of those decks. I wanted one of the 388s when they first came out, but due to financial constraints - i.e. no money - I never bought one. I had forgotten about the 388 until you mentioned it actually. Thanks again for the info.
