Delay on recorded track

I am pretty new to recording and I'm hoping this is a simple fix.

I use an MBox2 with Protools LE 7.4.

I originally installed it on my home PC (and never had this problem with that installation). I recently installed in on a relatively new Dell laptop (so I can record in a better location than where the home PC is located) and have had this problem with every session I have tried to record since installing it on the Dell laptop.

When I am recording a track, I can hear the track being recorded in my headphones (along with all the other tracks) but all the tracks are "real time" except the one being recorded. This is a very anoying delay in the track being recorded. It is significant enough that I have to mute that track or I cannot get through a vocal or guitar track. I don't know if this is a mic issue (i'm using a mic that needs phantom power and was not before), a Protools setting or a computer hard drive issue that is due to it being on the laptop, but I'm thinking it is one of the three.

Whether I mute the track being recorded or not, it properly records the track without the delay, it just delays the "live feed" of the track into the headphones and/or monitors.

Anybody know how to fix it?

thanks

What you are experiencing is latency.

You have two options to avoid this being a problem:

1. Go to Options>Playback Engine and set the Buffer Size to something smaller (128 or 256 should be alright).

2. Mute the track and rotate the "Mix" knob on the Mbox to achieve a decent mix of input/output.

Wouldn't it have been nice to setup the M Box to monitor BEFORE it hits the disk? It just doesn't make sense to me to monitor after disk. WHats the logic behind that? Someone knows . . .

Well it has direct hardware monitoring...

It's kinda difficult to do real time monitoring through a computer without latency.

It's gotta undergo A-D conversion, some processing, then D-A conversion. This all takes time.

The best solution is to have a low buffer size for recording, then lift it during mixing. This is not limited to Pro Tools.

Thanks. I will try lowering the buffer size. It is not killing me to just mute the track I'm recording and then leave one ear of the headphone off to hear the instrument or my voice on the track I'm recording. But it's a pain for sure.

ok delete any unwantedfiles on ur desktop, this will be a little bit better, then do a system de bug, this will push all of your memory into the slots that are empty on your hard drive, this wil most likely make it better, how much delay are you getting, because if it is more than 2 sec, i cnt help u
