Token Mat (original)

With this song, I tried to get away from using so many synths, so I just kept this one to minimal acoustic instrumentation and didn't try to get everything perfect and quantized. I didn't really do that many retakes eather, so this is pretty raw. It is just a little experiment. I hope you like it.

Sounds really good mix-wise, but I don't know if it's your best work. The Queen-ish intro was way cool, but then it went into "Jack and Diane" from John Cougar Mellencamp.

I did like it though. You are very talented young man.

I never said it was my best. I don't think it is. I just thought it was sort of cool to see try and use no vsti stuff. I even did the snapping and clapping thing you suggested a few songs back. The big choir thing at the first was pretty fun to do. I stood about four feet from the mic at different positions, and panned them around. I think about 8 overdubs for each of the three parts. Same for clapping. 8 for clapping, and 8 for snapping. Thanks for the input greg. It's always nice to hear it.

Propman,
nice intro & nicely recorded acoustic stuff. The intro is half Queen & 1/2 TMBGiants.
You have a strong connection with TMBG don't you - they colour your ideas & melodies - sometimes ever so slightly other times big time.
The accordian & doormat both combine to reveal your tastes.
Nice little track - it'd make a nice between tracks sidebar on your album.
Good experiment with mic placement too !

Yeah the claps sound very good and natural.

Yey, it's the TMBG kid!

Yeah, this is an interesting track - I liked the claps and clicks too

...sorry I got carried away and then listened to your version of "3 Is the Magic Number" - excellent backing vocals...

Sorry, back to your new song - very TMBG start. The vocal sounds quite old this time and a little rawer, as you said...sometimes sounds like Axel Rose!
All in all, it's an interesting track.

I do have a very strong connection with the band. They have to be my favorite. The band who got me into music though was the eagles. I had a little drum set when I was about 4 or 5 years old, and I remember playing the drums alog with them watching the hell freezes over concert. My dad remembered me playing with desperado, and he said I didn't miss a beat on the snare. I got into they might be giants after I saw something they had done on late night with conan o'brien. It wasn't an all too great perfrmance, but enough to get me wondering aobut them. I picked up the album "The Else" (their newest to date) and was blown away by it. With each album I heard, I was blown away more. The funny thing is, I had been hearing them for years and not even knowing it on cartoon network. (courage the cowardly dog, dee dee and dexter) They are a great band, and even if I don't realise it, I guess they do influence my sound in a lot of ways. On a side note, I have never really tried anything with mic placement. I'm glad it worked. What is a sidebar by the way? Thanks.

Great. I have a nickname. I'm glad you liked 3. I did that one quite a while back. And Axel Rose? Wow. That's flattering. Thanks!

Cool tune! Those harmonies are pretty stellar, IMO.

Hey propster!

I've given this several listens since you posted and I am torn. I love the idea behind it (I think I may've even requested that you go in a more raw direction - not sayin' you did it because of that - just sayin' ) and it is indeed well-executed, but I found it just ventured into too much of a mainstream sort of pop-rock territory once it got going. Totally subjective of course and I don't mean to be a downer or anything.

I guess I am just so used to your quirky, precise electronic arrangements that this may take some getting used to. Performance and mix sound great to me as usual.

It kind of does sound like that doesn't it? But that was the point. I was trying to try something different, and in any case, I'm glad you somewhat liked it. Thanks!
