Hi all.
This may be a very stupid question, so you´ll have to forgive me in advance. I´m in the process of setting up my computer for recording...Audiosport Quattro, Cubase VST 5, Korg Trinity. I do not have any monitors though. Is it possible to run the stereo outs from my soundcard (Quattro) thru my hi fi amp and monitor form those speakers. They´re a pair of serious Cerwin Vegas but I don´t know if you can monitor like that? Help!

There's no reason that you can't monitor like that. However, consumer audio equipment probably isn't ideal for mixing and you might want to consider getting an amp and monitors. There's a couple of threads that you could read to explain why, just do a search. But, if your on a budget and want to spend the time to really learn to mix on those speakers, there shouldn't be a real problem. Hell, I got 'real' monitors and an amp (yorkville ysm-1's and samson servo 550) and I'm still learning to get a mix on them that translates well.

Yes, you should do a search. What I learned when addressing this issue is that your home stereo amp and speakers color the sound significantly (for example, they add bass), whereas good studio monitors give you a more "neutral" sound, warts and all, and help you hear everything better. Of course, since ultimately your music will be played on home stereos, car stereos, discmen, shitty computer speakers, etc., you will want to test your results through these other media after you're "done" mixing, and then go back and mix again, and so on, and so on, until you go insane.

But you should get studio monitors.

Looks like I´ll stick with the stereo speakers till I have the cash to invest in some real monitors...

or another option is to sell those Cerwin Vega's and get a pair of Yorkville YSM-1's...Wheaton Audio has them for $89 a piece...you could still use the hi fi amp you have to power them....think about it.....
