Just a few questions before I start

So i bought a Tascam US-122L and got everything working and sounds good. But I kept my mixer from when I had my multi track recorder to use with my interface. My question is do I need it? it doesnt seem like I do.

Also is there any other recording program besides Cubase thats good?

Thanks

No, you don't need the mixer, unless you want to "pre-mix" sounds down to one output before they go into the Tascam.
Lot of people swear by Reaper, check out the separate forum sections for software.
