Anybody upgrade from SX3 to Cubase 5
If you have, how did it go? How do you like 5? Any issues opening SX3 projects?

Hey NL,
I'm still using cubase studio 4.5.2. I refuse to upgrade to a steinberg product while it's still a .0 release so 5.0....no way. As everyone knows, the paying public are steiny's beta testers. As far as I know your sx3 projects should open up fine in 5 as they do in 4 as both 4 & 5 have the new improved audio engine. They are always backwards compatible. I got cubase AI4 with my yamaha N12 and that would NOT open sx3 projects but the studio 4 did and cubase 4 does so I'm guessing 5 will be the same. Everything over the SE version opens all previous version files. Our vocalist went out and bought Cubase 5 the other week and so far he's quite happy with it but it does have a few bugs. The new reverence reverb is a total cpu hog. the autotune thing is basicaly just melodyne and the loopmash thing he/we never tried as we don't work with loops. I get the over all feeling C5 with its new gadgets is aimed more at the one-man-band market. Cubase studio 4.5 is still doing EVERYTHING I need it to do. You do know steiny dropped direct-x support a while back right? so any DX plugs you have you can wave bye bye to. |

Apparently, the handful of DX plugins I use must have built in wrappers, because they are all automateable. So, it looks like I'm in the clear. I'm not too thrilled about being a beta tester, but heck, they've never done a final update to SX3! I keep telling myself I'm gonna switch to Reaper. After this, I probably will. ![]()

Couldn't quite believe it myself mate. I think they're trying to make their platform exclusive with the new VST3 plugs. To me they are a decent enough step up from the stock plugs in SX3 but I never used many of them back in the day either. Between my UAD stuff and my waves api/ssl stuff I have all the plugs I'll ever need.
Get yourself over to cubendo.com .... that place is an eye opener ![]() |

you had to pay for the final version of SX3...it was called cubase 4, it too had its bugs and you had to pay for the fixes...it's called cubase 5 which is still pretty buggy to me.
Welcome to the club. I won't be switching to 5 |

Well, I just got my copy of Cubase 5.
I got say it looks like it is gonna blow SX3 away! It opened up my corrupted project no problem (see other thread in this forum), it looks fantastic, you can change the order of plugins (a stupid easy feature SX3 lacked), and it lets me run SX3 off the new dongle! (I sold my copy and dongle from SX3) Also, all my plugins and all project setting were picked up by Cubase 5. I read on the internet, that all my routings would have to be reset, and I have a pretty complicated set-up. I wasn't looking forward to that! No problems though..... I'll update again after I use it for a bit. I really want to try the VariAudio feature. It looks like it's pretty user friendly.

I hear ya. It's too bad they never fixed all the stupid limitations in SX3.
I've already found a bug in Cubase 5, but other than that, it is a HUGE step up from SX3.
