Help Building New Comp for PT8

Here are the specs so far on the new machine im building for pt8 let know of any prtyoblems with any of the gear I have listed such as compatability or any other issues. Any and all feedback will be appreciated.

Looks like it should be good, but I would recommend using XP SP3 as SP2 isn't tested or qualified.

That's a great machine you're building.

Only one thing I would say is that you should get, instead of 2 harddisk's, an extra small HD for your OS and other software like Protools.
It's better to have your projects on an HD, then your samples and sound libraries on another one and Protools with your windows XP on a separate HD.

Which means 3 different HD's.

This way your harddisk's would stream the samples, VI sounds and your recorded audio in Protools in an better and efficient way.

It's not necessary but if you have the option go for it.

Also, if you can afford it, I would go with a HD with a little more than 7200 rpm for your samples/ and recording/read drive. That can potentially be a "bottle neck" in your system when running intensive PT LE sessions. Any weak link will cause a slow down.

I am also a fan of actually having multiple processors running in parallel as opposed to dual and quad core processors..This way I can choose to assign a particular number of processors to handle RTAS plug-ins at my will, not at the computers'.

Another consideration... which you may have already checked. To run protools on a custom PC like this you have to make sure everything is compatible. Mostly just the motherboard. Protools requires some pretty specific chipsets. Check out the Digi page I think they have all the information on there somewhere.

one more on the hard drive front...

gotta agree with the guys above... i always thought hard drive speed wasn't that important,,,but i started getting slowdowns and errors.

now i run two raptors at 10k

one for system. and one for sessions that are in progress.

then a 500gb standard drive for overall backup.


i would seriously recommend that or something similar.

Are you sure you wouldn't rather go for a faster dual core rather than the quad?

Does PT really utilize the quad core that well?

And I would personally throw in an Intel board. But that's just my opinion based on past experiences.
