Recording some drums!
I'm recording a band tomorrow.
My room is pretty small, so I noticed the overheads were picking up everything, no matter what. So I ended up with no stereo image at all. It honestly felt like equal high hat and ride on both tracks. SO, what I'm gonna do is just aim them more at the HH and ride and go from there. I have mics on the snare, two toms, and kick. I'm thinking about using a nicer mic, a few feet back from the kit, just to add some of the overall picture into the mix. Would that be pointless? Also, I'm using Drumagog to bring out the kick and snare, but I'm thinking about mixing the samples in just enough to make a difference. Anyone else here use this plug-in? What are your overall thoughts...I really like it, though it does feel a bit of a "cheat" to use...but at the end of the day it sounds awesome and I just can't get "that kick" with the gear/room I have. And at the end I think I'll run all the tracks through some 'verb, but just faintly. This is a pointless post with few actual questions, but I'm really excited. I'll post my mixes when I'm done. later, Ben |

It may not be the room. It may be the placement and/or the mics. I used to have a lot of trouble getting any stereo imaging when I used some Nady (Chinese) SDCs. I switched to a pair of (unmatched) MK-012 SDCs, and it was like night and day. Suddenly, I had a stereo image---exact same placement, exact same room, exact same kit, exact same pres, etc., just with mics that didn't suck. What mics were you using?
