Question slow, acoustic track... ***opinions needed***

http://www.mediafire.com/?uniw5hmjmmx

I just labeled it "harmony", not because thats the title, its just that I think of how I wrote the notes as my "harmony style", its just what i call it, I dont know what the real name for the style is.

I will try basically anything, trying to get something "beautiful" made.

A lot of times, I try to learn to make rapid-fire arpeggios, and complicated multi-instrumnt arrangements. I am impressed by how simple, and yet somplex sounding, a really good "unplugged" song can be. (and jealous when i hear it on here, LMAO)

here, I tried to do the "simple yet complex" slowed-down acoustic track.

I realize I dont have the skill required to write lyrics over something, nor the necessary "stuff" to make a convincing drum track or accompaniment sometimes. I figure if I ever make something "actually good", someone else here would do that/those "parts".

I somehow picture Icystorm writing the lyrics for this one, but i dont know why... I like reading his lyrics even before I hear the music he makes to go with it...

PS - some part(s) recur, and I guess you could think of those as "verses" and "chorus" and "bridge" and stuff... *shrugs* I'm not really "up" on my book learning about that stuff. The one melody line gets reused 3 times, I suppose thats the chorus... theres a short "thing" that softens the I ---> IV "jarring sound" of changing gears (chords...) suddenly, but... *shrugs* I just liked the way it sounded, really.

This is a tranquil song . . . a river with a glassy service, sitting placidly in a summer sun, with the swallows swooping low over the water for their airborne prey.

I enjoyed this very much, and I like the direction you are heading.

Again, this is a track I can put to a video. I have some footage that I took this morning that would suit it really well . . . so it looks like another project is on the way.

Also . . . I hope you are not averse to me fiddling with your material . . . but I can hear some extras I'd like to add in..

...

You wanna make another video, hear hear, in the future dont even ask, I dont mind.

You wanna add a drum trax, you have drumagog or whatever, go ahead, I take no offense. You wanna add a track of something, go for it. I pretty much "trust your ear" by now.

I am starting to think that "at times" I have made somethign nice, then added drums and other instruments, which sometimes "kill it".

I mean, in real life, a guitarist might some up with a basic acoustic melody... he might try different chord voicings and harmony lines, make a bridge here or there... then present a couple minutes of "it" to his band, right?

I mean, the guitarist dopesnt go and try to record a drum track, thats for the person whos good at it in the band, right? In a likewise fashion, I am thinking I should just do something, and when it stops "working" or "going anywhere more...", just STOP and put it out there (here....lol) and see where its at.

I'm pretty sure stuff I have made before could have been "saved" had I quit when I was still ahead, LMAO

glad you liked it.

PS - DO you like the soft string noise as the guitar players hand leaves the last note? LMAO... some of that string noise really seems (to my ear, anyways...) make it seem "real" and better somehow *shrugs*

PPS - I am a firm believer that there are quite a few "hits" here in this songwriter section... just not necessarily all the same people everytime, like a traditional band. My next guitar idea will maybe sux, LMAO... one guy mightg write poignant lyrics we all like, and yet another might be the one to sing over it... like that.

I think I am "half decent" at coming up with partial melody ideas or sometimes full melody systems, but I dont have realistic drums or elec guitars, sometimes I "nail" the bass line, other times not nearly as well... some of them I feel they need "arranged" around by someone who knows what they are doing...

pity there isnt a job description for what I do, I guess... I'm not quite a full-on composer, but I'm not just trying to write lyrics and jot down chord names over some of the words, either... I'm somethign inbetween.

I DO hear, now and then in some of these, strong "hooks" and lines of lyrics... which I might try to sing along in places, and they "catch" in places... but, I cant sing one note, and don't understand "something" about putting lyrics to melody notes, I guess. Its sporadic.

Hi SEDstar,

+ 1 to GZ's comments. One of the supplied desktop pictures on the Mac features a tranquil scene of a temple surrounded by trees overlooking a calm pool of some kind. It goes very nicely with your track.

I'd encourage you to develop the use of your voice - it's an endlessly useful musical tool. Apart from anything else it allows you to play two instruments at once (the voice is often described as the No1 instrument of all) and also tell a story as you do so.

Like any other instrument you do need to put a good chunk of study and practice time in though. I haven't sung for years, and was hopeless at it, so I joined a local community choir so that I could be sure and get some weekly singing done. It's already been a big help, and it's great fun too...

Cheers,

Chris
