Just starting out, please help

I have purchased some basics just to make some recording at home to put together a rough demo. I got a mixer, USB Audio Interface (Roland UA-1EX), mic, keyboard and so on. My understanding is that without M-box, I cannot use ProTools (Is this the case?). Can anyone tell me what programs and drivers I need to record vocal and piano? Simple, 2 tracks. I have Fruitloops could that work? If so, how do I set up the input. Could Reason be a possibility? Your help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Protools does require proprietary hardware. Usually Digidesign or M-Audio. I do believe they offer a free trial package but can't tell you much about it. Cakewalk makes some good entry-level programs. You can also download freeware packages that I've heard good things about. Krystal is one that I've heard a lot of positive things about, but I have never used. Fruityloops (now called FLStudio) may have tracking options but I can't remember. After doing some reading it sounds like Reason may be a very decent option for you. Aparantly they have a downloadable demo. You should check it out. In the future; i would advise you to search these threads for similar questions as this type of query comes up frequently. The people on these boards are very knowledgable (present company excluded; i'm still learning a lot) and very willing to share their knowledge. Usually the only thing they/we ask is that you be willing to do some leg work as well. I hope this gets you started on the right path. One very important thing to remember is that gear is only as good as the person running it. Constantly listen, constantly evaluate, and work hard to sharpen your skills. Good luck and post often.

I have heard some very good things about Reaper. It offers a free version which you can use until you have the 50 bones for the license, as long as you need to. I am a PT user, though, and cannot say much else for Reaper other than it is spoken of highly and as a great choice for beginners. What version of Protools do you have? PT mpowered has been expanded to work with maudio products for your convenience, pt le however is digidesign hardware. Hope this helps, and please do post often

Last time I checked Reason does not allow you to record audio.

Id go with Reaper if your not looking to spend to much. Although I use cakewalk and it has done everything I needed it to. Obviously do some heavy research into these products before you think about buying them.

I also am an entry level user and can recommend Reaper. I have been using it for about a year and it has been great. Best $70 (AUS) I ever spent.

If you realy want a good deal just get an M-Box 2 Pro, I found one on ebay for about $600 dollars but that was with Pro Tools L.E 7.4 and I dont know how much Pro Tools 8 will cost but it is a good stard and comes with great starting plug ins and trial ones as well.
