syncing modern equipment

I hope this is the right place for this thread . . . if not I trust it will be moved soon enough!

I'm about to embark on my first recording project in over a year. I'm recording to tape but using some digital gear. I inted to stripe my tape with SMPTE using a JL Cooper PPS 100. This machine will also convert the SMPTE to MTC. My question has to do with the Boss DR770. I was reading the manual and it does cover sync options but still left me a little confused. Does anyone know if it's possible to tell the 770 when to start based on SMPTE/MTC positions? (I know that's what syncing is, but it didn't really cover how to set start/stop positions.) Below is a link to the manual online. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Are you after MTC offset positions? Or just getting the 770 to start playing automatically when the MTC begins?

On a previous Roland unit I owned, when it was in MTC Slave mode, hitting Play would put it in a pending status and playback would begin when it received MTC...

I don't have the equipment you're configuring, but according to the manual, with the 770 in Slave Mode:

"If the Master device is able to transmit Song Select or Song Position Pointer messages, the song number and song playback location specified on the Master device will also be specified on the DR-770."

Based on that, it sounds like it should do what you're wanting it to...

Thank you for the reply!! To me, that sounds like if I'm running a sequencer it can do that. But I don't have a sequencer. But maybe i'm an idiot!!! Thanks again for the response!!

SOrry, didn't see this before . . . . I don't actually have the gear yet so I'm just researching if I want to drop the cash on the 770. I want to be able to tell the 770 "at X position on the tape . . . .start" etc.

That's MTC Offset. If 770 0:01:00 equals 0:08:04 on tape, you just set up an offset on the 770.

unfortunately roland e mailed me and said that the 770 only syncs to midi clock. I'm new enough at this that I'm sure I don't understand but I don't think the PPS100 has a clock. so i think i have to find a new machine.
