Skipping
Have you checked the Virtual Memory settings on your computer, could be set too high. Just a thought!
I had a problem with skipping, it went away when I disabled the wireless LAN connection whenever I started Cubase. ... yeah I know...I'll eventually pull a wire to the studio. |

Top guesses:
- clocking problem. Unlikely if you are just running the one interface, but check to make sure that Cubase and your interface both think they are using the same sample rate. - latency/buffer settings. Cubase should take care of that for you, but maybe play around with them. - other device conflict (as noted above) - background software ruining your life (disable antivirus, windows update, whatever else you got while recording--I turn off my DSL box to cut off the outside world) - check your interface drivers--if it has ASIO drivers (let's hope), make sure Cubase is set to use them. - lastly, optimize your OS (XP, Vista, whatever) for music - there are websites with checklists for that. |

- If you have more than one *physical* drive on your system - two drive partitions on a single drive does not count - set it up so that your data drive, where you record your music, is not the same drive as the one on which Cubase is installed. If these are EISA/ATA or PCI drives, try to set it up so that your data drive is the first drive in the buss chain. If it is a USB drive, shut down any unnecessary devices on the USB buss while you are recording. - Run a Scandisk (or better utility) on your drives to make sure you don't have any bad data or flaky hard drive formats. Once you're sure that's OK, run a full defrag on your drives. - When working in Cubase (or any other NLE, for that matter), shut down any unnecessary programs in your Windows system tray. Disconnect (physically) from the Internet while working in audio and then shut down any firewall, anti-spyware or anti-virus software sitting in memory. Also any unnecessary TSRs in your System Tray such as Quicktime controllers, Java control windows, etc. that just are not needed for working in audio. Of course, *make sure you re-boot and reload your anti-malware and firewall stuff beofre you re-connect your Internet connection*. - When working in Cubase (or other NLE), learn to use the "lock" or "freeze" function in that software to keep the amount of real-time plug-in processing to a minimum. - Make sure you have the latest *stable* (not beta) drivers for your audio interface or soundcard installed. - Check the Cubase manual or Cubase support forums for optimal Windows and cache memory system settings and adjust to them, if necessary. EDIT: Oops, MSH beat me to a lot of these by 5 minutes ![]() G. |

Your problem mimics pirated software. You may have paid for it but using it without a dongle means it was hacked.

You haven't mentioned what type of interface you're using...

Mine has the same issues sometimes, and it's usually some background program. I don't understand why software manufactures feel they have to run a crapload of programs in the background.

Sorry I didn't see that. You mean his reference to a thumb drive?

Do a ctrl-alt-del, go to processes and sort them in order of 'amount of memory used'.
Cubase should be using the most resources. Below that, there shouldn't be anything close if your computer is releatively clean. Look for programs that shouldn't be there. Examples would be iTunes, virus scanners doing their thing, update software such as quicktime or java.

Although, I did see in another thread that he had the Mercury Waves bundle and a Perception mic - that doesn't make much sense.......
