Pro Tools 8 LE Fixed Everything!

The issue I was having with really low track counts has been solved! Huzzah!

Where once I could play only 16 or so tracks on my Macbook Pro, I can now play 48!

Yay

I haven't decided yet. It's smoother, that's for sure. I think I like it: I'll report back later

Ah right. Not sure I really like the new colours to be honest, I'm so used to seeing PT look the way it does now. Not sure why they felt the need to re-do the colours?

steve ... are you talking about increased computer efficiency(in pt8) with getting you more tracks? Or just the increased track count offered.

Pro tools always seems to get a bit cpu heavy on me and was hoping they figured out how to take a little load off.

PT 8 is .. I think either make or break for me and pro tools. I like it but I just dont feel right in pro-tools. I want to have confidence in my program!

Hope it works out for you, thanks, eric!

Although I'm now 99% sure I had an installation issue with PT 7.3, I'm talking a ridiculous amount more CPU efficiency with this version.

If I have regular Macbook 2BG of RAM .... Is this enough to run protools with all the plug-ins, or do i beef it up to 4GB or higher?

It sorta depends on which plug-ins. It's my (potentially flawed) understanding that it's the processor that limits the amount of plugins: ram is used more for virtual instruments and sampling.

Pro Tools Fixed Everything!

.. but can it fix my mixes!?

I'm either upgrading to 8 or ditching pro-tools. I want ADC and VST support, unlimited tracks and super computer efficiency.

Picky? Shouldn't a person be this picky when their generation of audio recording is practically done for them...

There is a VST--> RTAS program... but you have to pay for it.

Is there an option to have the "classic" styling?

I had a quick look at a friend's installation and it made me freak out a little bit!!!

I like the way PT looked before.....I guess i'm just so used to seeing it that (for the few minutes I had to play with it) it felt very confusing/disorientating...despite the near-identical layout.

No, you can get close-ish to it, but not the same.

You get used to the new darker colouring very quickly. In fact when I have gone back to using 7.4 and earlier, I've hated the brighter grey screens.

Give it a try! :-)

Agreed 8 rocks my socks.
Playlists work brilliand, multiple automation lanes, a decent midi editor, much much much prettier (you will gro to love it, I had a little freak out first but got used to it quick)

infact their is only one or two things I want from PT now, one of those is to have guitar rig work again and FM8 but thats not digis fault. That just leaves audo to midi conversion and thats it! (actually thinking about it I might post on that topic now)

Hello, I'm interested in Protools Le 8. I know NOTHING about protools but have read a lot of pro/con stuff.

Mostly, I'll be transferring tracks from analog tape(2 synched MSR-16s) to tracks in a software program to mix. I have a lot of older tracks I want to remix ITB. I don't do that much recording anymore but still like to add tracks and mix stuff. Would a program other than Protools be better for what I like to do? And what type of hardware interface is required for Protools Le8?

Thanks.

PT 8 can easily do what you want, but then again so can just about any DAW software. These days the competition is mostly about features like plug-in support, delay compensation, etc. Also, with Pro Tools you are limited in your choices of Audio Interface to either Digidesign hardware or newer M-Audio Hardware (for PT 8 M-Powered, close to LE in features). If you went with SONAR or Reaper or Cubase you would be able to use the interface of your choice.

I use PT because I like it. I recommend getting some demos and going to town, then buying the one you are most comfortable using.

Pro Tools would be just fine for what you intend to do. Once you learn most of the basic functions, editing and mixing becomes a breeze. Before pouncing on Pro-tools, maybe weigh some other options. Almost any modern DAW software should be capable of what you want to do. A lot of times it comes down to how you like to do it and what makes you feel comfortable. So figure out what you want before you jump on anything. But hey, dont get me wrong, Pro-Tools is alright with me! It just bears mentioning that many others do it well.

For your analog transfers, sounds like you may be talking about a lot of tracks at a time. So regarding an interface you would have to go with a digi 003. I dont think any of the mbox's are capable of hosting that many inputs.

The 003 has 8 inputs on the hardware plus adat ins for I believe a total of 16. If I'm not mistaken, you will only get 16 simultaneous inputs max using a protools Le system (and the 003 with adat in's would be how).

For high input counts, the cheapest way in is to M-Powered, with the Profire Lightbridge and a couple of ADA8000's.
