Beatles done it, Ledd Zepelin did, 2pac did... BUT HOW?! How is that possible, i tried googling and what i get is just brunch of sites telling what records songs had PHONETIC REVERSAL.
When playing normals you get "When you see me nigga holla my set" but backwards "Yes im alive and me mising you" so hows that possible and how to make those words?

Here's a link that may be of interest on the topic and with some specific examples:
http://www.triplo.com/ev/reversal/

The way I've done a form of phonetic reversal is as follows:

1 Decide on a phrase I want to mess around with.

2 Record this phrase.

3 Reverse the recorded phrase

4 Mimic the reversed phrase pronunciation as best as you can.

5 Record your reversed pronunciation

6 Reverse the recording of this.

I've also done this with a guitar solo.

I recorded a solo and reversed it.
I then learnt how to play the reversed solo, then recorded and reversed it in turn.

Thanks for replay. But Still i dont understood it very clearly i tried to record some of my lyrics but all i get is vijsusujsujs (you know, reversed-nothing normal stuff). Is there any "abc" for writing backward lyrics that can sound normal no mater if you play it normal or reverse. Can be this only done using English lang? I'm amazed that you get normal words to have other meaning, and stuff so i just wanna play little
Here is example from one song :"Everybody needs to chill" and when playin reversed you hear "You should see me ill be back" and i still dong get it...

Hmmm...

Baster... I dont know your age, but I am showing my age when I make the following quotes...

"Pauls a dead man, miss him, miss him..."

"my sweet satan"

and my FAVORITE one...

"The music is reversible, but time isnt... turn back... turn back... turn back..."

There was even one that said "you... found.. the ... secret message..."

LMAO... I am not sure what it accomplishes, they used to call it "backward masking" I didnt know they changed the name of the technique, LMAO

honestly, if you play any song backwards with a lot of lyrics in it, at various speeds, you can eventually convince yourself you heard a snippet of "something". I am not sure what the reasoning is, other than "attention" which of course sells albums, but only when people "leak" the "secret" out...

This could, I guess, get to the point like the "secret trax" thingy for a while there... it got to be a bit much, lol

*sigh*

great, more PMRC and "subliminal messages" hearings a-GAIN *sigh*

LMAO

I THINK, I am guessing here... lets say you wantd to hear "satan" backwards masked... play it backwards (sounds like Nay-Tass) which is of course nothing... BUT, if you put the phrase "Nate Has" in your lyrics somewhere you will be "reverse Phonetic-ing" the word "satan" when played backwards...

I SUPPOSE you could slowly pick out several words to form a phrase, but its an awful lot of work, and to what end, I question...

That one was an actual secret message. If you listen to it forward (It's From Pink Floyd's The Wall ("Empty Spaces" I believe, by the way), it's just gibberish.

SED's right, most backmasked messages are coincidences. Those that aren't only sound like anything sensible when listened to backwards, not forwards.

If you want it to sound like you have hidden messages in your songs, try changing your enunciation. I've found that when I enunciate more clearly in my songs, they're more prone to sound coherent backwards, but your results may vary.

I agree. Robert Plant and at least one member of Queen vehemently denied backward masking. Jeff Lynne also denied that ELO did it. One band (I can't remember which one - was it Styx?) placed a backwards message in a song on purpose after being accused, simply as a response to the accusation.

Regarding the denials, why would one engage in the practice of backward masking and then deny it when it's discovered, unless they wanted to shroud the whole thing in more mystery and keep the debate going? I suppose that admitting the act of using backward masking would effectively end the debate.

After hearing the chorus to "Another One Bites the Dust" played backwards, it's hard to believe Queen did not intentionally include "it's fun to smoke marijuana" in there. Even listening to it forward, with the way the lyrics are spit out, sounds kind of odd to me.

Led Zepplin's "Stairway to Heaven" sounds eerily normal in spots when it's played backwards. That's kind of a creepy, haunting song anyway.

At any rate, I think backwards masking is more of a publicity stunt, to generate interest, rather than any attempt to convey subliminal messages to listeners.

BTW, a great other topic for the general thread would be the most haunting songs of all time.

Cheers,
Joseph

It all in your head

I can see no esthetic value in reversal of lyrics – devil worship and subliminal mind control theories aside – I think it is just another type of hook; probably even just a totally commercial exercises, rather than adding sonic or lyrical value to the song.

As far as actually hearing stuff – the human brain is geared to see/hear patterns from ‘faces on the Martian landscape’ to ‘consonant and vowels creating words’.

Any system big enough (the bible, a crowd, the reversed phonics of the lyrics in 3 min song) will randomly generate events that could be recognized as patterns that are not necessarily intended.

The interesting thing is that French, Germans and Chinese all hear stuff when ‘Stairway to Heaven’ is reversed. Now I love Zep, but multilingual secret messages, I think not.

I think reverse reverb is far sexy than reversed lyrics. I also liked Robbie William’s hidden track about 5 mins after the final song (I know he’s is not the only one) It is a bit of a pain when trying to fit on a full iPod and you wonder why a 5 min song last 20 mins!
