Balaced input/output adalptors??
I am trying to hook up and test some gear I purchased that has balanced inputs and outputs.
The inputs are marked 20K ohm transformer coupled and the outputs are marked 600 ohm. The pin outs are : Pin 1: Ground Pin 2: (-) Pin3: (+) Question: can I safely run these to unbalaced ins and out without damaging the equipment? If so, would I tie pins 2 and 3 together and send these to the tip and the ground to the sleeve or ??? |

Pin 2 and 3 carry the same signal with the polarity reversed. If you tie them together, they will cancel each other out.
Pin 3 is the tip, pin 1 is the sleeve. You can leave pin 2 hanging.

OK, thanks. So is at as simple as making connector to connector adaptors, of do I need to be concerned about impedance or level matching?

Oh yeah...nice picture. I opted for the passive version

That will depend on what you are doing. Most 'test equipment' is used to measure level and such, so matching isn't an issue...

Sorry, not "test equipment", but i am testing equipment.
Specifically, i have several ITC cart units from a radio station with balanced I/O's I am trying to TEST the record and playback functions by running the signals to and from unbalanced sources. |

Ooops, I must have misread that. I'm not sure what type of signal those machines expect to see. If I had to guess, it would be a +4 level signal. But that would just be a guess on my part.
For the purposes of testing, it probably doesn't matter.
