need help with tascm 388 tape

Hi,
I dont know anything about all this sound recording stuff. But my boyfriend LOVES to record. He just got a tascam 388 and he wants tape for his birthday. I read some fourms and found some suggestions for NOS AMPEX # 407 MASTERING TAPE.
Is this a good tape? what else might you suggest?
