Improving my setup?
Hey guys,
I have started gathering gear to do some recording. I have some basics and am able to record to a reasonable standard. My gear is as follows: Toshiba Satalite Laptop, Windows XP (SP2), 1.86GHz, 504MB RAM, 93GB Hardrive Western Digital 320GB External Hardrive Cubase SX 3.1 Korg D3200 multitrack hard-disk recorder Behringer BCF2000 USB/Midi Controller Desk 1x Shure SM57 1x Shure SM58 2x Samson C02 Pencil Condensers 1x Rode NT2A Condenser 2x Behringer DI100 Active Direct Box 1x Behringer DI20 Ultra-DI 2-Channel Active DI Box/Splitter 6x Whirlwind MC20 XLR Microphone Cable (20 ft.) I record straight into the D3200, then can export the files as individual wav’s and bring them into cubase as I am happier to produce and mix using it. I use my BCF2000 to control the mixing of 8 tracks at a time. I only use the compression, reverb, etc etc in cubase, not on the D3200 or any externals. I have one pair of Sony MDR7506 Headphone Monitors and at the moment am solely using them to mix on, which clearly isn’t ideal. I only have one mic stand which is also a big problem. It is a bedroom based setup and I would like to be able to record decent quality demos for artists and bands. I want this to be a setup I keep improving on, and maybe even turn out to be a half decent studio one day. I have around £1100 to spend and am thinking of buying a pair of active monitors, drum mics (although not sure to go for individuals or buy a set), 6 or 8 more XLRs, 6 or 8 more mic stands. I was just wondering if anyone has any advice on what else maybe be good, or advice on what I want to buy. Thanks |

Hi what are you recording with the Korg at the moment? What are you hoping to record in the future?
Are you exporting each individual track from the Korg and re-mixing in Cubase? Why don't you replace the Korg with a decent audio interface and external pres?

I'm basically just recording myself and friends at the moment (vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards etc) but would like to record full bands (either as live take take, or individually and i can do with with the D3200.)
I have only just purchased the korg a few months back (August) and went for it because if i was to go with a decent audio interface my computer wouldn't be able to handle it. At the time I didn't have enough money for an interface and to upgrade my laptop. |
