Can MIDI Controllers trigger audio files?

I'm a music hobbyist interested in purchasing the M-Audio Axiom 25 USB MIDI Controller Keyboard. From the very vague information I've gathered online about MIDI Controllers, I assume that with the right software (Enigma, or FL FPC?) it's possible to assign a .wav audio file (such as a recording of my voice) to the MIDI controller...?

Is this possible?

Certainly, with sample-playing software like a sampler (Kontakt, etc).
