Mounting studio monitors....

I have a pair of dynaudio bm5's in my new control room set up, but I need to elevate them approx 9 1/2 inches. I'm wondering the most effective way I can do this without sound carrying through the floor, using materals I already posses. I have lots of 703, deflection and absorbsion foam. none of it is rigid enough on it's own to hold the monitors steady. I was thinking of making a box with plywood and 2x4's, stuffing it with 703, and tying to place the speakers on the foam under that pedestal. Mounting them on the wall and on stands from the floor is not an option due to the wall and desk. What should I do?

(Sorry if this has been posted, but I ran a search and could not find any answers!)

I put mine on books. Big books, like a dictionary. Makes me feel smarter, too.

Absorption materials like the foam and glass you mention will not do much to keep vibrations from transferring to the desk or floor. Physical isolation and pure mass are your friends here. So is your local Home Depot.

One popular design for speaker stands is to use PVC plumbing pipe. Fill with sand and glue a flat panel over the end(s). Paint to taste with a can of spray paint.

Then attach some self-stick thick rubber/foam pads (also available at Home Depot) to the speaker side flat ends to provide a bit of vibration isolation between the speaker and the stand.

Or just use some 4x4 wood posts instead of the PVC and sand, and use wood ends and carpenters glue instead of PVC panels and PVC adhesive.

Books work great, but I don't use them myself so that Rami feels smarter.

G.

I found some iron plant stands at a craft shop, Michaels. It's the kind of place that sells fake plants, picture frames, candles, make it yourself home decorations.

Anyway, they are about 30" high and 10" square and fit my Event TR8's perfectly with of Auralux speaker lifts.

Check out your local craft-type store, lotsa usuable stuff there.
